Saab 9-4X, 2012

The new Saab 9-4X brings unique design and engineering values to the growing mid-size crossover segment. With distinctive Scandinavian and aircraft-inspired looks, it also offers car-like handling and ride characteristics that challenge class benchmarks.

Making its world premiere at the 2010 Los Angles Auto Show, the 9-4X expands Saab's product portfolio to three car lines and will provide a fresh, alternative choice for independently-minded crossover buyers. It is an important next-step in the Swedish brand's renaissance as an independent premium car manufacturer.

Muscular and sporty to drive, the Saab 9-4X is aligned in looks and size between the 9-3X all-rounder and new 9-5 sedan. Outside and inside, it communicates its Saab identity with clean, uncluttered design and signature motifs, such as its wraparound-effect windshield, ice block lighting theme, driver-focused cockpit and flexible cargo handling.

In true Saab tradition, the 9-4X delivers on its sporty persona. It is configured around a unique, purpose-designed crossover body structure, which has been key to delivering its exceptional handling and ride properties. Car-like driving dynamics are supported by Saab's advanced all-wheel-drive system, Saab XWD, and DriveSense adaptive chassis control.

Under the hood, nestles a choice of compact and efficient V6 engines, naturally-aspirated or turbocharged. The 265 hp, 3.0-liter motor for the entry-level model features direct fuel injection and variable valve timing; while the 300 hp, 2.8-liter exchanges direct injection for twin-scroll turbocharging and is exclusive to top-of-line Aero variants. Both engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions under adaptive, electronic control.

The Saab 9-4X goes on sale in North America in May 2011, with sales in Europe and other global markets due to begin from August. Prices will be announced shortly before sales commence.

Body sculpted by Saab
The Saab 9-4X cuts a broad and powerful stance, with clean, uncluttered lines that echo Saab's Scandinavian design ethos. Its distinctive face, in common with the new 9-5 sedan, draws inspiration from the award-winning Aero X concept car, with a deep, three-port grille and 'ice-block'-effect lighting themes.

Disguised windshield and door pillars create Saab's signature wraparound-effect, the single glasshouse graphic emphasizing the brand's traditional 'cockpit' look. Other exterior Saab identifiers include the shaping of the headlamps, a 'hockey stick' waistline and strong C-pillars complemented by a wraparound-effect rear screen.

The roofline is visually lowered and extended by a rear spoiler integrated in to the tailgate. At the rear, the lighting carries forward a signature introduced by the new 9-5 sedan. An 'ice-block' bar lit by LEDs extends across the lower tailgate and wraps around the light units. Twin rhomboid-shaped exhaust tailpipes are also neatly integrated into the lower bumper molding.

Overall, the Saab 9-4X's bodywork is noticeably free from unnecessary decoration or trim. A dark protective appliqu? is applied to the lower body, but there are no wheel-arch claddings or protective body panels.
Entry-level variants are fitted with 18-inch, six-spoke alloy wheels and Aero models are distinguished by 20-inch, nine-spoke 'turbine' alloy wheels, as well as a black mesh front grille.

Cockpit-inspired cabin
The spacious cabin provides comfortable accommodation for up to five adults and is defined by a signature Saab, driver-focused cockpit layout. The center console, center stack and main instrument display are presented within a single form that sweeps up around the driver. For the Saab 9-4X, this is finished with wood or, for Aero interiors, a carbon fiber-effect trim.

Other subtle references to Saab's aviation heritage include a selectable, aircraft attitude-style speed read-out, green illumination for the needles of the three main dials and traditional Saab 'joystick' adjusters for the mesh-style air vents. The ignition - a start/stop button - is, of course, located between the front seats, in true Saab tradition, adjacent to the shift lever.

Large, supportive seats include a standard, 8-way electrical adjustment for the driver and an optional electrical adjustment of the foot pedals. Rear passengers enjoy particularly roomy accommodation as rear space is not compromised by the presence of a third row of seats. They also benefit from an independent, three-way manual adjustment of the rake of each 60/40 fold seatback.

Ample onboard storage includes double-decked pockets in all doors, a two-tier front glovebox and a deep bin in the center console with 12-volt, USB and AUX connections. Rear passengers have additional storage in the rear face of the center console and the center armrest.

Infotainment includes two audio options, a seven-speaker or top-of-the-line, 10-speaker Bose system with 5.1 surround sound. The optional 8-inch touchscreen, hard disk-based navigation system includes a bird's eye map view and 10 GB storage for 'jukebox' music files. Communication on the move is supported by an integrated Bluetooth hands-free phone system, which functions via voice command and steering wheel controls, as well as the infotainment panel.

In the rear, passengers can enjoy independent climate control, in addition to the standard dual-zone system, and select their own onboard audio/visual entertainment through a dedicated unit in the back of the center console. This has a video AUX input and two 8-inch screens in the rear face of the front seatbacks.

Adaptable cargo carrying
The trunk of the Saab 9-4X is optimized for space and ease of use. The 60/40 split seatbacks fold down in a single movement, without having to move the seat cushions or remove the retractable head restraints, providing a completely flat cargo deck.

The front section of the trunk floor is hinged and can be opened via an aircraft-shaped handle to reveal an additional under floor storage. Floor space can be tailored as required by an optional, U-shaped track with a telescopic cargo dividing rail, which can be moved to any position to keep items in place.

For additional convenience, the tailgate is available with a remotely controlled, hydraulically powered operation. It can open fully, or to a lower, programmable position if there is restricted clearance overhead, such as in the garage.

On the move
The Saab 9-4X brings car-like handling and ride qualities to the crossover segment. Extensive development testing alongside competitor vehicles shows the Saab 9-4X has a level of dynamic performance - in ride refinement as well as handling - that challenges the very best in its class..

Key to such excellent driving qualities is a unique body structure, purpose-designed for a crossover application and free from compromises through adapting an existing sedan or wagon format.

Advanced driving technologies include Saab XWD, the sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, which infinitely varies drive torque between the front and rear axles. This pre-emptive, light and fast-acting system offers optimized grip in all conditions, dry or wet, smooth or loose, on road or off-road. It is combined with an electronically-controlled, rear limited-slip differential (eLSD) which can transfer up to 50% of rear torque between the rear wheels, to whichever has more grip

Driver and vehicle in the Aero are brought even closer together by Saab DriveSense, an adaptive chassis function which uses real time damping control to help the Saab 9-4X react to how it is being driven and to changing road conditions. In addition to the default 'Intelligent' setting, the driver can select 'Comfort' and 'Sport' modes. An 'Eco' mode, activated via a separate button, also re-maps the throttle pedal and gearshifting patterns for optimal fuel economy.

Other driving aids include variable effort steering, a function of Saab DriveSense, and standard bi-xenon adaptive lighting, which provides better illumination of upcoming bends by linking the direction of the headlamp beam to the steering angle.

Efficient power packs
The powertrain line-up comprises two efficient all-aluminum V6 engines, both with a six-speed automatic transmission and Saab XWD. These light and compact, 24-valve motors feature variable valve timing, on both inlet and exhaust sides, and boast power ratings typical of larger displacement engines.

A 265 hp (195 kW), 3.0-liter naturally-aspirated motor for the entry-level specification includes direct fuel injection. It propels the Saab 9-4X from zero to 100 km/h in just 9.0 seconds.

Available exclusively in Aero specification, the 2.8-liter turbo engine packs 300 hp (221 kW) and generates an impressive 400 Nm spread of torque between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm. It delivers zero to 100 km/h acceleration in 8.3 seconds. Fuel consumption figures for both engines are still being finalised.

Leading safety performance
Excellent safety complements strong performance, and the Saab 9-4X benefits from more than 50 years of Saab experience in working with occupant protection. Saab crash testing and computer simulations are based on what happens in real collisions, on real roads. Many in-house tests developed by Saab are over and above those legally required or carried out by consumer test organizations.

The success of Saab's work is reflected in surveys of real-life collisions by the US Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) and the Swedish Folksam insurance company, where Saab cars have consistently scored well, several times being ranked best in their segment. The Saab 9-3 and the new 9-5 sedan are also maximum 5-star performers in EuroNCAP crash safety tests.

Tony Bennett makes nostalgic return to Italian roots

ROME (Reuters) - Whenever crooner Tony Bennett returns to the land of his roots, he feels overwhelmed.

"When I sing in Rome or anywhere in Italy, I get a complex," he said after performing for a sold-out hall at Rome's Parco della Musica.

"I know too much history, too much about the magnificence of Italy, the place where the orchestra was invented, the first piano, the first violin," he said, the feeling of awe mixed with pride clear in his voice.

With an easy laugh, he said he has come across singing waiters in Italy that could give some professional singers a run for their money.

Bennett, currently on a tour of Europe that will also take him to Spain, Monte Carlo, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland before it ends in August, left the Rome crowd sublimely stunned that he could still belt out his famous songs with style despite his 85 years.

Don't expect a light show or sound effects. A Tony Bennett concert, even if held in an auditorium or a piazza, feels as intimate as if it were in a small club in Greenwich Village. In fact, a number of people in the audience said later they felt as if he were singing just for them.

He is accompanied on the European tour by Lee Musiker on piano, Gray Sargent on guitar, Harold Jones on drums and Marshall Wood on upright bass. His daughter Antonia, 38, opens the show for him and they do several duets.

Bennett clearly has a soft spot for Italy, its people, its food and its musical heritage but the softest spot is for his parents, who came from the poor Calabria region in the deep south.

His father, Giovanni Benedetto, a grocer, left the tiny, dirt poor mountain hamlet of Podargoni in 1906 for the Astoria section of Queens in New York City, where Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born in 1926.

"The legend from all my relatives was that he used to stand at the top of the mountain in Podargoni and the whole valley would hear him sing," Bennett said by telephone after his Rome concert.

His mother, who worked in a clothing sweatshop in New York earning a penny a dress, was the daughter of immigrants from the same region of southern Italy. His father died when Tony was 10.

SINGING WAITER

Like Irving Berlin and Frank Sinatra before him, Bennett began as a singing waiter.

"I remember saying very clearly to myself and the musicians I was with then that if I never become famous or successful I'm going to do this for the rest of my life," he said. "That's how much I loved entertaining people".

Bennett dropped out of high school to help support his widowed mother. He served in World War Two and after some false starts had his first big hit in 1951 with "Because of You".

"My mom did something that changed my life. She would make as many dresses as possible but when she got a bad dress she would throw it over her shoulder and say 'don't let me work on a bad dress, only the good dresses'," he said.

"Later that became my whole premise with music. I said 'I don't want a hit record, I want a hit catalog. I don't want to do one song that isn't intelligent or quality music.'".

The 1950s were dotted with hits such as "Rags to Riches," "Blue Velvet," and in 1962 he released what would become his signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco".

Bennett likes to recall that he recorded San Francisco in one take because "I was prepared" and says it still astonishes young artists that he prefers to record in so few takes even now.

His two "Duets" albums in 2006 and 2011 were smash hits and brought him wide appreciation among younger listeners because of his collaboration with the likes of Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, Bono, Dixie Chicks, Sting, Sheryl Crow and Norah Jones.

Indeed, the two million-selling albums have introduced old classic such as "Stranger in Paradise", "The Way You Look Tonight", "Rags to Riches", "I Wanna Be Around", "The Lady is a Tramp" and "Body and Soul" to millions of young people.

FREE ADVICE

Bennett, who is planning an all jazz album with Lady Gaga, has some fatherly - or even grandfatherly - advice for young artists.

"Fame is very threatening. You might be very famous and then go right down and broke because of some artist that comes along who's better.

"You're supposed to be the business for a long time. You shouldn't think of fame, you should think of quality, then you stay in the business all the time," he said.

He also has some pointed advice for record companies, with whom he had his share of scrapes in the 1960s when they forced him to sing contemporary rock songs.

"Record companies should trust artists more, rather than order them to sing trite music, something that will be forgotten in two weeks or 10 weeks and go to the junkyard," he said.

Every day, Bennett, while reflecting on the ups and downs of his long life and career, enjoys his other passion: painting. He paints under his real name, Anthony Benedetto, creating mostly landscapes and cityscapes.

"Rembrandt said there's only one master and that's nature and the more you become an artist and study nature, you realize that nobody in the world, including Rembrandt, ever painted as good as nature. Nature is the boss. We are nature ourselves. Nature is our god, that's how I feel about it," he said.

Bennett came up from "complete poverty" and has been a social activist most of his life, taking an active part in the civil rights movement in the United States in the 1960s.

He calls famous people who don't want to acknowledge their poor roots "failures".

Bennett and his wife Susan established a non-profit organization, Exploring the Arts, that has raised millions of dollars to support arts program in New York public schools.

"When you come from humble beginnings and become famous you should help other people from humble beginnings and support them. You can't forget them. You can't just close the door and forget your background," he said.

US infrastructure sees spike in cyber threats: report

2 hrs.

Cyber threats reported by U.S. energy companies, public water districts and other infrastructure facilities surged last year, a new government report shows.

The Department of Homeland Security's Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team said that it received 198 reports of suspected cyber incidents, or security threats, in 2011, more than four times the 2010 level.

The report gave examples of cases in which firms were infected with malicious software designed for espionage and fraud.

The agency described a 2010 case in which investigators helped remove a version of the Mariposa botnet virus from more than 100 computers at an unnamed nuclear energy firm. The Mariposa virus was primarily used for financial fraud, though it could have been used to take complete control of the computers.

The virus entered the firm's network after a nuclear engineer plugged a tainted USB flash drive into his laptop, then connected the laptop to the system, according to the report.

The device was provided to the engineer by an instructor teaching a course to nuclear engineers, said Sean McGurk, a former DHS official who helped respond to the incident.

"We all know we aren't supposed to take USB sticks and put them into our networks, but time and time again it has proven to be true," said McGurk, who now manages an industrial control systems security practice at Verizon.

While ICS-CERT said the virus did not impact operations at the nuclear plant in question, it added that the virus could have spread to the laptops of engineers at other companies who took the same course and picked up similar flash drives.

Nitro, Night Dragon?
?The agency said its staff worked with victims of previously reported campaigns in which hackers targeted sensitive data held by chemical firms, energy companies and defense contractors ? the "Night Dragon" attacks first reported in 2010 and "Nitro" campaign uncovered last year.

More than 40 percent of the incidents reported in 2011 were from the water sector.

Many water districts used a control system that administrators could access via the Internet that had a bug in it that made it vulnerable to hackers. ICS-CERT said it worked with the vendor to fix the bug, then urged operators to update their software.

Altogether ICS-CERT provided assistance in 28 cases in 2011, by either sending in teams of experts or through remote assistance from its Advanced Analytics Lab. It intervened 15 times in 2010 and 4 times in 2009, its first year of existence.

DHS spokesman Peter Boogaard said that ICS-CERT has been working closely with operators of industrial control facilities in recent years to help them institute procedures to better identify and prevent cyber incidents.

"The number of incidents reported to DHS's ICS-CERT has increased, partly due to this increased communication," Boogaard said.

Several cyber security experts said they believe that operators are in fact doing a better job of detecting intrusions.

"The operators are starting to wake up and realize that they need to look at their systems," said HD Moore, chief security officer at security firm Rapid7.?

Ask Slashdot: Are Smart Meters Safe?

An anonymous reader writes "There is a lot of controversy and a big hullabaloo about Southern California Edison and various other utilities around the country installing smart meters at residential homes. Santa Monica police consider wildlife response policy changes

After meeting with animal welfare advocates over the killing of a mountain lion last month, the Santa Monica Police Department said it would consider changing procedures for handling wildlife incidents.

In a statement released last week, the department said it was committed to training first responders and to developing a list of local consulting experts. It said it would also seek appropriate equipment and tools and support ongoing efforts to reduce the likelihood that wildlife would enter densely populated urban areas. But the department added that state law limits what police officers, scientists or veterinarians can do to control the animals.

"The only thing law enforcement can do with a mountain lion is kill it," said police Sgt. Richard Lewis. Under the law, which prohibits the hunting of mountain lions, the state Department of Fish and Game is responsible for tranquilizing mountain lions, also known as pumas. Lewis said the law would have to be changed to allow local veterinarians, animal control officers or others "closer to home" to tranquilize the animals. He added that such a change would be unlikely.

The suggestions for altering protocol for wildlife incidents grew out of a June 25 meeting the Police Department held with animal rights activists, veterinarians, national and state park representatives, and officials from the Department of Fish and Game.

"The group's participants readily acknowledged that, although public safety must be the primary consideration under such circumstances, the safe capture of wildlife is a valued response," Lewis wrote. He added that participants agreed successful captures were elusive "when wild animals are encountered in urban settings."

That was the case May 22, when a 3-year-old male mountain lion meandered into the heart of Santa Monica and came face to face with the janitor of an office complex. The man alerted authorities.

Police officers arrived just after 6 a.m. and found the 75-pound cat cornered in the courtyard of 1227 2nd St., a building that houses a yoga studio, a law firm and a college admissions office. Three game wardens and Santa Monica Fire Department personnel were called. Officials cleared the streets of most passersby and ordered the lockdown of a nearby preschool.

As news helicopters circled overhead, police officers and firefighters tried to subdue the feline with tranquilizing darts and pepper balls. When the agitated lion kept trying to escape, an officer finally shot and killed it, about four hours after the standoff began.

Authorities defended the killing, saying the lion had posed a threat to public safety. But animal rights activists contended that the cat could have been saved.

The lion was "young and lost," said Madeline Bernstein, president of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles.

Jeff Sikich, a biologist with the National Park Service, said the incident was unusual.

"In the past 10 years, that's the first time one has ended up that far into Santa Monica," said Sikich, who works in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

A mountain lion's home range can encompass 300 square miles, roughly the size of the Santa Monica Mountains area, Sikich said. Because some aggressive older males occupy the habitat, young lions try to extend their range. Some roam until they encounter a freeway and then turn around. But many others are killed by vehicles while trying to cross roads.

Sikich said the California Department of Transportation next year would reapply for a grant to build a wildlife corridor under the 101 Freeway near Liberty Canyon that would help lions migrate to new habitat without having to cross a busy highway. The $10-million project, he said, would keep them safe from vehicles and allow for greater genetic diversity that would in turn help sustain the species.

"We know the freeways are a major barrier to wildlife movement and survival," he said.

America's most crowded beaches

Independence Day brings to mind fireworks, barbecue, and, if you live in Ocean City, crowds. More than 300,000 sun-seekers flood this small Maryland town each July 4th, packing restaurants, boardwalk attractions, and, of course, the beach.

America's Generation Y not driven to drive

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - To Shoshana Gurian-Sherman, driving seemed like a huge hassle.

"Part of it was laziness," the 23-year-old Minneapolis resident recalled. "I didn't really want to put in the effort to learn how to drive ... I knew how to ride the buses, so it was not necessary.

"And the other thing was, it was just scary, the idea of being in charge of a vehicle that potentially could kill me or other people," Gurian-Sherman said.

She eventually got her license at 18, two years later than she could have, after her parents threatened not to pay for college if she did not learn to drive, a skill they considered to be important.

In her reluctance to drive or own a car, Gurian-Sherman is typical of a certain segment of Generation Y, the coveted marketing demographic encompassing the 80 million U.S. residents between the ages of 16 and 34.

Bigger than the post-World War Two baby-boom generation but without the middle-class expansion that drove the earlier group's consumer habits, Generation Y includes an increasing number of people for whom driving is less an American rite of passage than an unnecessary chore.

"That moment of realizing that you're a grown-up - for my generation, that was when you got your driver's license or car," said Tony Dudzik, a senior policy analyst of the Frontier Group, a California-based think tank that has studied this phenomenon. "For young people now, that moment comes when you get your first cellphone."

U.S. residents started driving less around the turn of the 21st century, and young people have propelled this trend, according to the federal government's National Household Travel Survey.

From 2001 to 2009, the average annual number of vehicle-miles traveled by people ages 16-34 dropped 23 percent, from 10,300 to 7,900, the survey found. Gen Y-ers, also known as Millennials, tend to ride bicycles, take public transit and rely on virtual media.

More than a quarter of Millennials - 26 percent - lacked a driver's license in 2010, up 5 percentage points from 2000, the Federal Highway Administration reported.

THE HIGH COST OF DRIVING

At the same time, older people are driving more, researchers at the University of Michigan found. In 2008, those age 70 and older made up the largest group of drivers on the road, more than 10 percent, which was slightly higher than those in their 40s or 50s.

The Michigan researchers offered a few reasons why some younger drivers hesitate to get behind the wheel: the high cost of owning, fueling and maintaining a car and the convenience of electronic communication.

The Frontier Group's Dudzik suggested a related cause: computer and smartphone applications that make taking public transportation easier, with minute-by-minute tracking of buses and trains and simple online maps and travel directions.

Whether Gen Y-ers will eventually drive more than they do now will affect transportation infrastructure costs, Dudzik said.

Bikes and car-sharing services make it easier to avoid the expense of owning a fossil-fueled vehicle. Environmental concerns are another reason, said David Jacobs of the Tombras Group, a marketing firm based in Knoxville, Tennessee.

"It's not the main reason, but it is a compelling reason," Jacobs said.

More central is the group's general anxiety over finances and the economy, he said.

"They're shouldering higher mortgage costs, rent; their insurance costs are higher than previous generation's," Jacobs said. "And all that's happening after a couple of recessions, so they've really never, as young adults, seen a very healthy, stable economy. They're worried about a lot of things."

To sell cars or anything else to Generation Y, he said, "you have to talk to them at their level and make them interested and show them you are a valuable, reputable company with a quality product and you do care about the environment, the economy."

That fits with Gurian-Sherman's thoughts on the environment in her decision not to own a car: "I don't know if I consider myself an environmentalist, but I care about the impact that I have." (Reporting by Deborah Zabarenko, Environment Correspondent; Editing by Lisa Von Ahn)
