3 hurt in fighting in Greece at Europa League game

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Riot police used pepper spray and stun grenades against hundreds of Greek soccer fans who tried to break through a police cordon at a Europa League game Thursday. The young fans hurled rocks and gasoline bombs at the police.

Three people were hurt and four detained from the violence that happened during and after a match between Panathinaikos and Lazio at Athens' Olympic Stadium. Before the game, police had intervened to separate rival fans.

The three injured fans were treated with first aid. Their injuries were not considered serious.

Panathinaikos and Lazio are in Group J of the European competition, with Tottenham and Maribor.

SocGen rogue trader Kerviel loses appeal against jail

PARIS (Reuters) - Former Societe Generale trader Jerome Kerviel lost his appeal on Wednesday against a three-year prison sentence for his role in France's biggest rogue-trading scandal.

A Paris appeals court ruled that the 35-year-old ex-trader, who had fought to overturn a 2010 conviction for taking huge, risky bets that cost SocGen 4.9 billion euros ($6.35 billion), was responsible

It said he must also repay the bank the billions lost, potentially a life-time claim on part of his earnings.

"Jerome Kerviel was the sole creator, inventor and user of a fraudulent system that caused these damages to Societe Generale," the court said in its ruling.

A nervous-looking Kerviel, who chewed his nails as he heard the verdict, was not forced to go to jail immediately. A separate judge will decide the precise terms of his sentence and how many hours he spends behind bars every day - a process that lawyers say could take weeks.

In all, Kerviel's sentence is for five years in jail, two of which are suspended.

The ruling is a victory for SocGen, which has spent years trying to shake off the scandal after it hit headlines around the world at the dawn of the 2008 financial crisis.

It also comes as the financial industry battles lawsuits over crisis-era behavior and public perception it is too risky.

Kerviel's lawyer, David Koubbi, said he was examining the possibility of calling on France's highest court of appeal, the Cour de Cassation, to rule on the legality of the rulings.

"We had given ourselves the goal of defending Mr. Kerviel against an absolutely appalling injustice. I can tell you that we've failed," Koubbi told journalists outside the court.

FAILED APPEAL

Kerviel has never denied masking the 50 billion euro positions that made headlines around the world as the financial crisis unfolded in early 2008, he has always said his bosses knew what he was doing -- which SocGen denies.

Former SocGen Chief Executive Daniel Bouton testified both this year and in 2010, calling Kerviel a "great deceiver" and saying that the bank's risk managers and back-office staff never stood a chance against the trader's manipulations.

The lack of a new "smoking gun" during this year's appeal that might have radically shaken up the case meant that outside observers saw Kerviel's chances of walking free as slim.

But if the judge had put any responsibility onto SocGen for the losses, the bank might have had to repay 1.7 billion euros in tax write-offs on the losses.

As for the 4.9 billion, the bank has already said it would be reasonable in reclaiming this sum, seen as a future claim on earnings than a one-off fine.

FTM 2012 Book Function - Bad Experience - Family Tree Maker ...

The book function from a user perspective is an eclectic mishmash of functions that appears to be cobbled together as an afterthought and a not very considered one at that.

Has anyone actually created a book in FTM 2012? I would like to hear people?s views on the how they found:
? Its functionality,
? Its ability to allow creative input
? The look of the finished product
? The amount of time spent doing and redoing things to remove repetition of information.

Here are some issues I have found:

1. Pagination is woeful there is not control over it especially if a series of reports are used. Instead if one report flowing into another large blank sections of page are left at the end and the next report started on a new page. It looks very poor. I know this would not be easy to achieve but it just looks so bad I won?t use reports.

2. Page setup occurs in two places in reports and from the menu in the composition area and every single report has to be individually set up. One area for page setup would make it a lot easier for the user.

3. Printing is not always as viewed on screen, when previewing a book the page is a different width when viewing it in the book composition area. (see attached)

4. There is a fault with printing reports that I raised with Ancestry two years ago ? not fixed yet. It is, if a page is set to ?A4? behind the scenes it remains ?Letter? size and the printing is offset to one side because of the difference in paper widths. For example, the tile in the header is centred on the page by default (there is also no user function to change its position) when printed on an ?A4? page with the page setup set to ?A4? and the left and right margins equal widths, the title in the header is not printed in the centre of the page.

5. The font style and size for headers and footers can be changed but where they appear, left, right or centre can?t be adjusted.

6. The rulers are displayed in inches despite the unit of measurement being set to millimetres.

7. The undo function is very clunky ? the step backward and forwards does appear to step on a single mouse click.

8. The ?save document? function is only visible on limited content e.g. ?Title Page?, ?Smart Story? it is not visible when a report is open.

9. The page layout varies from the book composition area to the book preview, i.e. the text and media are not in the same position on the page. The page appears to be different widths and margins are noticeably different from one to the other.

10. The page doesn?t print within the designated margins as displayed in ?Book Preview?. It appears as if the page is printed as a ?Letter? size page despite the fact that it is set at ?A4? in page setup in the book composition area.

11. What is the relationship between paper size and margins when placing a report in a book? Does the book set default page size and margins? OR, Does the report override the book page size and margins? It doesn?t work well and is a mess when printing!

12. If the page size is changed (report page setup) from ?Letter? to ?A4? in the Family Group Sheet a blank pages result. These cannot be removed. The only remedy is to return the page size to ?Letter?. This may be the case in other reports I haven?t tested all.

13. Book ?header and footer? lacks flexibility, the choice is ?on? or ?off? and font style and size. What about control horizontal position, i.e. left, right or centred?

14. Information from smart stories does not appear in the ?Index of Individuals?. This makes it an incomplete reference.

15. Best of all it is Soooooooooooo slow, even running on super speed PC.

I appreciate the book function references the family tree data base for information and it is difficult to integrate the data into a book and at the same as providing flexible user control over its content and look. But if it?s not user friendly, inflexible in its ability to customise the look of a book and has inconsistent control over functionality, don?t have it just to keep up with the other family tree programs.

As silverfox3280 stated in one of his posts ?I give the book function an F?, I think he was being generous.

Please provide comment, the more the merrier. If you haven?t experienced ?Books?, have a try at creating a one and then provide feedback. Add more issues to the list if you find them.

If this message board item receives enough responses it could be used in the hope of having Ancestry improve the Book function. I will provide feedback to Ancestry based on the response to responses to this post.

I Need More Gay Friends | Thought Catalog

A year and a half ago I wrote a post for Thought Catalog called ?The Importance Of Having A Queer Family? in which I praised the bonds between gay men. I talked about how overjoyed I was to have found such a close-knit group of gay friends after I had moved to New York and why these relationships had been so crucial to sustaining my happiness.

Unfortunately, sometime between then and now, I?ve found myself orphaned and in dire need of a new gay family. Don?t get it twisted, nothing terrible happened. A lot of my gay friends and I just grew apart and became casualties of demanding careers, lifestyle changes, and new relationships. A part of me feels like I may have romanticized these friendships and put them on a pedestal, leading me to wonder, ?Did I ever really have a close group of gay friends or was I just embellishing??

Whatever the case may be, the reality is still the same: my number of gay friends has shrunk considerably and now I am aching for some gay-on-gay platonic friendship. Whenever I see gay men hanging out in packs, I immediately feel jealous and insecure. How did these guys all meet each other? Was there a secret meet and greet in the beginning of the year that I didn?t know about? I feel so inadequate next to them and then I start to think, ?What is it about me that has resulted in my failure of obtaining a decent amount of gay friends? Am I not leading a ?gay enough? life?? The question may seem ridiculous but it does cross my mind. I don?t do a lot of ?gay things? so, of course, my exposure to the scene is limited. But in a way it feels like a catch-22. I don?t feel like I relate and connect to a lot of gay men but, then again, maybe that?s because I don?t spend a lot of time with them. Which came first: the chicken or the gay friend? (Ew, sorry, that sounded like a bad Sex and the City joke.)

I want to feel like I?m a part of the gay community. Even though I love my friendships with heterosexuals, there?s something so important about being able to call a couple of your gay friends up and be like, ?Yo, you wanna go and be gay tonight?? In the past, I?ve had some of my best nights out when I?ve exclusively been with gay guys. We go out to the bars and be gay together and it feels amazing. I realize that I?m being sort of glib and simplistic when I talk about what it feels like to hang out with only gay guys (what does ?going out and being gay together? even mean?) but I don?t really have another way to describe it. It just feels good to be surrounded by other like-minded dudes who are into dudes. It?s like, ?Wow, we get along as people and you also like to suck dick? Score!?

Quite frankly, it?s just hard for me to get along with most gay dudes. Some of them piss me off with their basic bitch mentality or make me feel weird for not hooking up a lot. I often leave the experience feeling very much like ?the other? instead of connected. Granted, this is probably due in large part to my own issues with being gay. I?ve never felt completely accepted by the gay community because I?m not cute enough, and don?t listen to Lady Gaga or go to the gym,?so I stay away from it, out of some misguided defense mechanism. I shut them down before they have a chance to shut me down. You can?t just write people off though. That?s not how you make friends with anyone.

At the end of the day, if I?m really serious about finding more gay friends, I have to stop being such a judgmental diva and put myself out there. Although the thought terrifies me, the prospect of going through my twenties without a giant gay support network scares me more.?

What Obama and Romney will say, and what the truth is

Monday's debate at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.?the last of the presidential race?will focus on foreign policy. What to expect from President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who are neck-at-neck in recent polls? Some bluster on China, hedging on Libya, and possibly, silence on Syria. Naturally, expect some campaign spin, too.

To clear the candidates' smoke around foreign affairs, we've collected and fact-checked the key foreign policy points to keep in mind during the debate, from trade to terror.

Libya

Romney: The president's greatest vulnerability on foreign policy is possibly the controversy surrounding the terrorist attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and his team in Benghazi, Libya on September 11 of this year. The attack remains subject of an ongoing investigation, so any discussion suffers for a lack of the complete, official account of what happened that day.

In the last debate, when answering a question about Benghazi, the candidates spent almost the entire time discussing the semantics of phrases like "act of terror" rather than scrutinizing the actual attack. Romney accused the president of refusing to call the murders a terrorist attack until 12 days after the incident.

Romney will probably avoid fussing over vocabulary this time around. At the Town Hall-style debate last Tuesday he was fact-checked in real time by moderator Candy Crowley. As she noted, 18 hours after the event, President Obama said this in the Rose Garden:

No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for.? Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America.? We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act.? And make no mistake, justice will be done.

As for the statements of Ambassador Susan Rice?whom Romney and Republicans claim diverted from the "terrorism" message, calling the murders spontaneous on Sep. 16?it's been known for some time that she and other officials were given talking points by the CIA, which ended up muddying the administration's position on the nature of the attack.

There are many other aspects of the president's handling of the attack that Romney may criticize?but if he returns to the "terror" talk, Obama is likely to have the transcript ready.

Obama: At the same time, the president is not being fully straightforward about why the Benghazi issue has become such a hot topic.

What is clear so far?from testimony given to a House investigation of the attack?is that the State Department denied requests for increased security personnel from its regional security officer for Libya; this included the city of Benghazi, where Stevens and his team were stationed.

President Obama will likely continue to avoid any direct comment on the potential negligence of the State Department in this matter, especially since Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has gone on record exculpating the president of any of the decision-making that took place leading up to the attack.

Afghanistan

Romney: Both candidates have heard the American people loud and clear: most people have totally soured on the continuing war effort in Afghanistan. The fact that only 27 percent of the public believes in the campaign has now motivated a usually hawkish Mitt Romney to lend his support to the president's 2014 withdrawal plan.

In a recent interview to ABC, GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan claimed that his running mate has ?"always agreed" with the timetable. Politifact uncovered several instances in which Romney did indeed voice support for that deadline?but usually with the hyper-qualifying addition that he would have to judge the "situation on the ground."

This could be the difference between withdrawal in 2014 and a renewed commitment to infrastructure, counterinsurgency, and military training in Afghanistan for several more years. As Josh Rogin notes in Foreign Policy magazine, even notable Republicans are aware of the elasticity of Romney's declared Afghanistan policy; and so while it is not a claim in direct conflict with the truth, his insistence that he has a clearly defined broad strategy for America's longest and now very unpopular war does not ring true with many both in and out of his party.

Iran

Romney: Romney is known to downplay the observable effects of the Obama administration's sanctions on Iran. He repeats variations on the line that he delivered earlier this year: that Obama "could have gotten crippling sanctions against Iran," but did not.

Given that Obama has presided over biting sanctions on the Islamic Republic?sanctions that Iran's leaders identify as responsible for the battering of its currency and wider economic turmoil?this talking point requires clarification. When asked about it, Romney's campaign told PolitiFact that the GOP candidate was specifically referring to an instance in 2010 when the administration failed to pass a U.N. resolution sanctioning the Iranian Central Bank.

Setting aside the probability that the veto-prone U.N. giants Russia and China would've blocked that particular resolution if it were pushed by any U.S. administration, it looks as though Romney is hoping this maneuver will come off to undecided voters as a broader failing of Obama's Iran policy

Obama: The Obama campaign has pushed back on this Romney line, stating that the president is waging an unprecedented diplomatic and economic effort to squelch the ayatollah's nuclear program. But the administration overreaches when it makes statements giving the impression that before Obama's presidency "there was no international pressure on Iran," to quote VP Biden.

PolitiFact.com notes a few serious international initiatives the Bush administration undertook to stifle the Iranians' nuclear program:

• Resolution 1737, passed in 2006, which banned trade with Iran in all items, materials, equipment, goods and technology that could contribute to the country's development of nuclear-weapon delivery systems.
• Resolution 1747, adopted in 2007, which banned the country's arms exports and restricted the travel of additional individuals engaged in Iran's nuclear activities.
• Resolution 1803, approved in 2008, which froze the assets of people involved in the nuclear program.

Despite the current campaign of sanctions, the theocratic regime has not renounced its nuclear ambitions. However, rumblings this past weekend of possible one-on-one negotiations has analysts wondering if there may finally be ground for a diplomatic solution.

So while Romney will likely try to undermine the severity of the administration's sanctions, expect Obama to leave out the fact that, not only do sanctions predate his taking office, but they still haven't achieved their main purpose.

China

Obama: The tall tales over "sticking it to China" continue: in the last debate, Obama turned to his opponent and said, "you're the last person who's gonna get tough on China."

This came after the usual attacks on Romney for investing in Chinese firms; the president often alleges that Romney is a "job exporter" and usually exaggerates the personal involvement the GOP nominee has had in his investments abroad. Super PACs supportive of the president echo this line of attack, broadcasting that thousands of Chinese employees "owe their jobs" to Romney.

While it's true that a good deal of Romney's money is invested in China, Obama's charges that Bain-affiliated companies shunned America while running straight for Asia are mostly misleading: a larger trend in the global market determined their production would be located in China.

What's more, Obama tends to conflate the fact that many Chinese employees found jobs at companies that Romney had invested in with the more controversial idea that Romney "outsourced" American jobs as a matter of protocol.

Romney: Last time around, Romney repeated his charge that the president allows China to cheat trade agreements through currency manipulation, declaring that Obama has had "seven opportunities to stop them" by slapping the "manipulator" label on Beijing via the Treasury. Romney says he wouldn't hesitate to use the label, which would pave the way for settling the issue via the International Monetary Fund.

It's true that the Obama administration has passed labeling China a "manipulator," but what makes this charge hyperbolic is that it's never been clear that doing so would stop it from cheating. As PolitiFact notes, it was tried in 1994 to no avail. Plus, the idea that the Obama administration has simply been appeasing China amid its economic mischief is false: Sticking with Romney's magic number, the administration has filed seven trade complaints against China through the WTO.

When we first heard of a rumored Samsung Galaxy Premier handset that might be a Nexus device, we had our doubts, especially when we saw TouchWiz adorning the alleged leaked image from Mobile Geeks. Now, GLBenchmark is also giving the idea of a new model more credence, as it briefly showed a possible GT-I9260 model packing a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display, dual 1.5GHz processor and 8-megapixel camera. The page has since been pulled, but a screen cap of the benchmark (after the break) shows PowerVR SGX 544 graphics on the device along with middle-of-the-road scores, though all that would be on a pre-production handset without final software, if it's accurate. Whether such a device would come along at a Google event or one of Samsung's shindigs remains to be seen, but its very existence should be taken with a boulder-sized chunk of salt.

Motorola HC1 is Ahead in Wearable Computing | Channelnomics

Google Glass may usher in a new wave of consumer mobile computing, but Motorola Solutions Inc. is looking to transform wearable enterprise computing technology with its new HC1, a headset that features hands-free computing, heads-up display and interoperability with hosted and cloud-based information.

The HC1, unveiled today at the AUSA Annual Meeting & Exposition in Washington, D.C., looks like something out of a science-fiction movie, something like Star Trek?s Borg or some futuristic solder from Aliens. The 1-inch display extends on a flexible arm in front of the user?s eye, providing the equivalent of a 15-inch notebook display. WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity enables the HC1 to connect to multiple devices and networks, giving the user ample access to information and applications.

HC1 is completely hands free. The user navigates the system and activates applications entirely through voice commands and hand gestures. The micro-display only partially covering one eye means the user has full range of normal vision; the display becomes part of the landscape. This adds up to a computing device that virtually melds into the surrounding environment.

And melding into the visual environment is precisely what Motorola is aiming for with HC1. The system is designed for workplaces and tasks with high risk and a need for manual dexterity, such as defense work, utilities, law enforcement, aerospace, energy and telecommunications. By providing users with hands-free access to information, they can check manuals, get instructions and record activity without having to multitasks with a conventional handheld or portable computing device.

Channelnomics had the opportunity to demo the HC1 while it was still in the Motorola Solutions certification center. While straps cover the entire head, it?s uncomfortable and is virtually weightless. The version show was running Windows 7. The voice commands worked well for navigating and application control. However, the responsiveness was noticeably slower than a conventional smartphone or tablet.

The display, built on technology developed by Kopin Corp., is crystal clear. Taking advantage of people?s bicameral vision and natural ability to scale images, the one-inch display looks like a larger screen that is transparent to the real-world background. A blink of the eye, and the image is gone. A slight turn of the pupil and the image is in full view. During the demo, we played ?Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol? on the embedded Windows Player; it wasn?t quite stadium theater quality, but it was comparable to a conventional tablet.

The HC1?s Bluetooth feature allows it to interface with other Motorola mobile computing devices, such as MC75A, MC65 and ES400, which are commonly used in government and manufacturing environments.

The Motorola HC1 isn?t going to be a channel best seller compared to other mobile devices, but it does have interesting applications and potential for rewriting mobile computing in hazardous and labor-intensive enterprise environments. It?s definitely worth a look for solution providers and businesses who want to see the precursor to the hands-free, wearable computing future.

Congo rebels call for negotiations with Kinshasa

BUNGANA, eastern Congo (AP) ? The president of Congo's M23 rebel group, Bishop Jean-Marie Runiga, says fighting may resume soon in eastern Congo if the government refuses to negotiate with the armed group.

Runiga announced that the rebels' military branch has been renamed the Congolese Revolutionary Army (Arm?e R?volutionaire

Congolaise) and its leader, Colonel Makenga, promoted to general as a result of the growing number of troops under his command.

Runiga said the leaked UN group of experts report accusing Rwanda and Uganda of supporting the M23 is wrong. He deplored that the Kinshasa government is negotiating with the Rwandan government instead of the rebels.

The M23 is a rebel group created in May by ethnic Tutsis who deserted the Congolese army.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams First Impressions | Video Game Blog ...

Fellow gamers, you all may have heard a thing or two about the ?Giana Sisters?. This game is actually quite old (Amiga, Commodore 64), and was originally seen as a Mario clone ? because it pretty much was. They even went as far as to say ?The Brothers are History? on one of the game?s releases. It was easy to miss out on this game, due to obvious legal issues with Nintendo, resulting in the game being pulled off the shelves.

Years later, there would be a DS/Android port. We now have Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams.

Lots of love was put into ?Project Giana? to not just recreate the game, but make something worth playing today. Twisted Sisters is going to be so much more than a Mario clone. I?m a proud early backer of the project, that got funded?successfully?through Kickstarter. Sometime after this got successfully funded and I helped put it out there, I lost track of things for a while. News is, they did indeed get the ?Greenlight? from Steam and it can be pre-ordered here!

As a backer, I had access to a ?Backer Only? preview of the game, which confirmed the fact that I will?thoroughly?enjoy this game, even if I end up dying a lot. Giana is a ?Mario-like? platformer, but more fast paced, and being able to switch between the light and the dark world for both platforming purposes and overall background changes is the most important mechanic about the game, and what I think will drag people in that otherwise are not interested.

Unlike Mario Bros, you are both Giana Sisters?simultaneously and can switch back and forth between the two. Doing this, makes changes to the stage as mentioned above. There?s more to it than the fancy art style you see, which looks great in either world, by the way. Doing this will also change the positioning of platforms, objects, ect, and proper use of this mechanic will make the difference between you getting far and not getting much of anywhere. I streamed the backer preview (much shorter video on just the first boss on the Video Gaming Hard Corps YouTube channel), personally, for about an hour and a half, made lots of dumb mistakes, and learned this REAL QUICK.

I felt I needed to put out another post on this just before release, to show my love for it, and perhaps convince some of you out there that this game is gonna be quite the platformer, and it definitely worth checking out. More details from me personally on this here!

Something else that really helps this game is the music, which also changes when switching between the light and dark worlds. Chris Huelsbeck (original Giana Sisters music guy) teams up with Machinae Supremacy (awesome band that also happens to be my favorite one) to make the tracks for ?Cute? and ?Punk? Giana respectively.

Democratic donors energize "Super PACs" as election nears

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic donors gave unprecedented amounts of money in September to their party's three main "Super PACs," federal disclosures revealed on Friday, a reflection of how wealthy Democrats' reluctance to give to such groups has faded in the weeks before the November 6 election.

A fundraising laggard for much of the campaign, the political action committee (PAC) backing President Barack Obama raised more than a rival group backing Republican Mitt Romney, the second consecutive month the Democratic group had done so.

The pro-Obama group Priorities USA Action said it raised $15.2 million in September, compared with $14.8 million for the pro-Romney group Restore Our Future, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.

Restore Our Future, a formidable advertising force whose attack ads on Romney's Republican rivals helped him secure the party's presidential nomination, began the crucial month of October with $16.6 million in cash on hand. On Saturday, Priorities' filings are due to reveal its cash on hand and donors for September.

Early this year, many Democratic donors were reluctant to donate to PACs supporting their party's candidates because they disliked the idea of contributing to attack ads and other negative advertising - a staple of spending by groups known as "Super PACs" because they have no limits on how much they can raise and spend.

In recent months, fundraising for Democratic PACs has accelerated to counter the waves of anti-Obama and anti-Democratic ads from Republican groups.

Meanwhile, the Democratic PACs seeking to help candidates win House of Representatives and Senate seats also saw donations rise in September.

Majority PAC, the group helping Democratic candidates for the Senate, announced on Friday its biggest cash haul since its creation in 2010: $10.4 million in September, and another $9.7 million during the first week of October.

Its sister group, House Majority PAC, also had its best month in September and is on track to double that in October, an aide to the group said.

CONTROL OF CONGRESS

Democrats need a net gain of 25 seats to become the majority party in the 435-seat House, an outcome that most pollsters see as unlikely. Republicans need a net gain of four seats to take control of the Senate. Most pollsters also see that as unlikely.

Scores of Republican PACs and tax-exempt groups have been formed to support Republican House and Senate candidates. Tax-exempt groups do not disclose their finances; disclosures of the most influential Super PAC, American Crossroads, are due later on Saturday.

Restore Our Future, the PAC that supports Romney, reported on Friday that its largest donors included Texas home builder Bob Perry and billionaire Harold Simmons. Perry gave $2 million in September and leads all donors with $10 million contributed to Restore Our Future during this election cycle. Simmons gave $500,000 for the month, increasing his total to the group to $1.3 million.

Republicans showed greater fundraising strength at the party level in September.

The Republican National Committee raised $48.4 million and ended September with $82.6 million in cash on hand. Its Democratic counterpart took out a large loan.

The Democratic National Committee, which has focused on races for the Senate and House, raised $20.3 million in September and borrowed $10.5 million. It ended September $20.5 million in debt, according to its filing with the FEC.

A DNC representative declined to comment on the reason for the debt and how it might affect Democratic candidates in the final two weeks before the election. The party had $4.6 million in cash on hand heading into October.

The RNC reported $9.9 million in debt at the end of September, with its $82.6 million in cash on hand.

Unlike the DNC, the Republican Party has been working closely with its presidential candidate, Romney, who heavily relies on its grassroots operation. On the Democratic side, Obama's campaign has a huge grassroots organization itself and does not need such help from its party.

Top bankers urge Washington to avoid fiscal cliff

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Top financial industry executives urged the Obama administration and Congress on Thursday to stop automatic fiscal austerity measures from kicking in at year-end, but did not propose fresh ideas for replacing those harsh budget and tax measures.

"The consequences of inaction ... would be grave," members of the Financial Services Forum, an industry trade association, wrote to President Barack Obama and members of Congress in a letter released on Thursday.

The letter, signed by 15 top executives of some of largest U.S. and global financial services companies, points to rising concern that lawmakers will run out of time to seal a deal to avoid sharp tax increases and spending cuts.

With a presidential election leaving the political landscape uncertain, negotiations to avert what has become known as the fiscal cliff are not expected until after the ballots have been counted on November 6 - and that has made many nervous.

If unattended, the impact of the sudden tax hikes and spending cuts could be severe. Independent policymakers, including Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, have warned that failure to avert the "fiscal cliff" would cause economic growth to contract sharply and hamper an already fragile recovery.

OBAMA SEES AN END TO DEADLOCK

The White House said on Thursday that the outcome of the election will break the deadlock over the key sticking point - whether to raise taxes on those earning more than $250,000 - and that there will be time to prevent the crunch.

"The president is confident, we remain confident that we can address these issues," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters traveling with President Barack Obama on Thursday.

"He said on a number of occasions that he is confident that since the electorate will have spoken on this issue, and will have endorsed the broad consensus that we need to take a balanced approach to these matters, that will compel Congress to move in that direction," Carney said.

If the White House and Congress fail to prevent them, $1.2 trillion in across-the-board spending cuts would start to take effect on January 2 and tax cuts enacted under former President George W. Bush would expire on December 31.

Lawmakers set up the year-end deadline as a spur to achieve a broader deficit-reduction package, but failed to reach such a deal.

The letter from the Financial Services Forum letter is not the first sign that Washington's lack of action in light of the looming threat has caused anxiety in the business community.

Last month, chief executives of some of the largest U.S. companies also urged Congress to step up efforts to avert the fiscal cliff.

In mid-November, Congress is scheduled to begin a post-election legislative session that will consider whether to extend all or most of the Bush-era income tax cuts, as well as several other expiring tax measures. It also will weigh whether to replace the across-the-board spending cuts with more targeted reductions that might be less detrimental to economic growth.

The Bipartisan Policy Center, a think tank, proposed on Thursday that Congress agree to postpone looming tax cuts and spending increases, and turn over the task of cutting the budget deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years to congressional committees.

Lawmakers should enact an initial package of tax and spending measures to serve as a "down payment" on a broader deal, the think tank suggested. It also recommended that Congress should agree on a backstop plan that would automatically become law if lawmakers fail again to reach a fuller deficit-reduction package.

Textron third-quarter profit shy of Wall Street expectations

(Reuters) - Diversified U.S. manufacturer Textron Inc reported a weaker-than-expected 6.3 percent rise in profit on weak demand for corporate jets and declines in sales to the military.

The world's largest maker of corporate jets raised its full-year earnings per share target, but the revised range of $1.95 to $2.05 was below analysts' expectation of $2.10, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Its previous forecast ranged from $1.80 to $2.

The maker of Bell helicopters said on Wednesday that third-quarter net profit came to $151 million, or 51 cents per share, compared with $142 million, or 47 cents per share, a year earlier.

Factoring out income from discontinued operations, profit was 48 cents per share, below the average analyst view of 51 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The Providence, Rhode Island-based company, which also makes EZ-Go golf carts and industrial components, said revenue rose 6.6 percent to $3 billion from $2.8 billion a year earlier.

Under Chief Executive Scott Donnelly, the company has been working to boost profit margins by improving manufacturing efficiencies and trimming back its finance arm.

But margins declined at Cessna, Bell and its military equipment units in the quarter. They remained flat at its industrial arm and rose at the finance unit.

As of Tuesday's close, Textron shares are up about 42 percent over the past year, more than double the 18 percent gain of the broad Standard & Poor's 500 index <.spx>.

Textron's rivals include General Dynamics Corp's Gulfstream unit, Canada's Bombardier Inc and Brazil's Embraer SA in corporate jets, and United Technologies Corp's Sikorsky unit in helicopters.

The company kicks off a wave of earnings reports from big manufacturers, with General Electric Co , Honeywell International Inc and Caterpillar Inc all due in the coming days.

• 3 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 3 x 3 chunks
• 14 oz. can diced tomatoes
• 6 oz. can tomato paste
• 1 cup chicken broth
• 1 onion, sliced into 1 inch slices
• 4 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 green bell pepper, cut into 2 inch pieces
• 1 cup whole mushrooms
• 1/2 cup dry red wine
• 2 tsp. dried Italian seasoning * or for simplicity add a tsp. each of dried oregano and basil
• 1/8 tsp. pepper
• 1/2 tsp. salt
• 2 Tbsp. cornstarch
• 3 Tbsp. water

Place all ingredients except cornstarch and water in 4-5 quart slow cooker. Cover and cook on low 6-7 hours until chicken is thoroughly cooked and tender.

If you want a thicker sauce, combine cornstarch and water in small bowl and mix well. Stir into crockpot; cover and cook on low 15-20 minutes until thickened. Serve with hot cooked pasta, if desired. 6 servings

* Italian seasoning is a mixture of dried basil, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, sage, savory and thyme. You can purchase this at the store. To make a homemade version, thoroughly mix together 1 tbsp. each of dried basil, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, sage, savory and thyme. Afterward, it should be stored in an airtight container.

• 1 8-ounce can reduced-sodium tomato sauce
• 1 4-ounce can chopped green chiles, drained
• 3 tablespoons cider vinegar
• 2 tablespoons honey
• 1 tablespoon sweet or smoked paprika
• 1 tablespoon tomato paste
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
• 2 teaspoons dry mustard
• 1 teaspoon ground chipotle chile
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 2 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 3 x 3 chunks
• 1 small onion, finely chopped
• 1 clove garlic, minced

1. Stir tomato sauce, chiles, vinegar, honey, paprika, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, ground chipotle and salt in a 6-quart slow cooker until smooth. Add chicken, onion and garlic; stir to combine.
2. Put the lid on and cook on low until the chicken can be pulled apart, about 5 hours.
3. Transfer the chicken to a cutting board and slightly shred with a fork. Return the chicken to the sauce, stir well and serve.

Over a short and recent period, Dubai has risen to assume a role model position for its neighboring countries, largely owing to its relative stability in a volatile region. The Middle East is in practically continuous political turmoil ? and the United Arab Emirates is the only nation that is not.

Dubai?s stable situation, openness to the West, solid leadership with a clear vision and mission, has made this Emirate a destination spot.

It offers an opportunity not to be missed for foreign companies, as well as for individual investors to venture in a growing economy that offers more than a decent tax-free return on investment.

Corporate Social Responsibility (?CRS?) is the natural next step in Dubai?s evolution: Multinationals have established headquarters in the country, real estate was the industry to invest in. Indeed, projects were so ambitious in nature that they made the whole world take notice, and finally, it offered a financial benefit to expatriates that allowed them to live a luxurious life that was unattainable in their country of origin.

However, true understanding and implementation of CRS initiatives has faced some obstacles, primarily cultural, religious and reactionary to global forces.

The Cultural Element

Society in the gulf region is tribal. The most powerful tribe rules the region and the rulers thereafter are descendants of that tribe. Therefore, hierarchy is respected to the highest degree and the Sheik (head of the tribe) ? usually the eldest member ? is blindly obeyed. These traditions hold true to this day.

As one can imagine, when the first expatriates arrived to the region, cultural clash became unavoidable. The Arab world had a preconception of the West as evil invaders or opportunists looking to exploit the Arab wealth, enforce their theories of business practices and change the Arab way of life. The region has always, ?since World War II, been subject to French or English occupation.?This dual patriarchy prevented the implementation of CSR as we know it today. After all, the region had just discovered oil and people were still living in tents. So at first the priority was building cities, schools and other infrastructure elements of modern day life.

The Religious Element

Islam is the dominant religion and the states? official religion in the Gulf region. All laws are based on the Holly Quran and legislation has to conform to the Quran.

When the concept of CSR was introduced to a mature economy, local businessman considered themselves to be actively promoting CSR. This interpretation is based on Zakat, one of the pillars of Islam that translates as ?transferring ownership of wealth to the poor and needy.?

Under Islam law, the rich have to give 2.5% of their trade profits or cattle trade per year to the poor, without expecting any reward. The money is given either directly or through governmental agencies that distribute the money. This was the Islamic version of CSR.

During the golden days of Islam?Zakat?money was placed in a communal government safe and people who needed money would ask the safe keeper for money when they were in need

Furthermore, these actions were not publicized as they go against a rule in Islam that states when a Muslim does a good deed, he should not mention it or publicly flaunt it, otherwise he will not be rewarded by Allah for his action. This action prevented the exchange of ideas and theories about the true meaning of CSR. Charity and philanthropy were also considered an Arabic version of CSR. The concept did not differentiate between individuals, corporations and the state.

It is also worth noting that during the golden days of Islam (the first 300 years), Zakat money used to be put in a government ?safe? and people who needed money would just come to the safe keeper and ask for money. Due to this share of wealth and strict adherence by the rich to pay the 2.5%, there were times when no one needed money and it would simply accumulate in the safe ? because ?Zakat money is different from government money and therefore cannot be used to build houses or schools. It is meant for the eight types of recipients only as mentioned in the Quran).

The Reactionary Element

As interaction on personal and business levels between locals and expats became deeper, the Gulf region started to take note of the real meaning of CSR and its implementation. The region played a reactive role at first to external global forces. Following the lead of Europe and America, the region duplicated CSR initiatives with a little customization to fit the culture. The early 1990s, however, presented a turning point for the Gulf region, especially in Dubai.

The Dubai government embarked with full force on a plan to educate and motivate companies to implement and create CSR initiatives and make them part of the companies? vision, mission and strategic plan.

The Role of Government

Dubai?s government built a reputation for taking the lead on new initiatives and thereby indirectly forcing companies to comply and come up with new CSR initiatives.?Some of the UAE government?s most successful CSR projects to date are:

According to their website, Al Masdar City was established in April 2006 and ?Masdar (the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) is a multi-faceted company advancing the development, commercialization and deployment of renewable energy solutions and clean technologies.? (www.masdar.ae).?Masdar integrates the full renewable and clean technology lifecycle ? from research to commercial deployment ? with the aim of creating scalable clean energy solutions.

Masdar consists of three business units ? in carbon, clean tech, and renewable energy ? and one investment arm focusing on clean tech and renewable energy venture capital.

II ? EEG (Emirates Environmental Group)

At its inception in 2004, the EEG CSR network was the only multi-stakeholder forum on the region dedicated to promoting CSR and sharing best practice.

III ? Center of Responsible Business

The CRB was established by Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industries to conduct research and studies in the development of CSR in the country. The center presents its recommendations and monitor CSR trends to be implemented in Dubai.

The Role of Major Companies with CSR projects

Four major companies in the region stand out as leading the regional pack with respect to modern day CRS projects.

The Emirates Group has established relations with over one hundred of the cities they operate in and their projects range from medical care, to educational programs, and classroom renovation work. All their projects are detailed on their website:?www.emiratesgroup.com

The Al Naboodah Group was?by two brothers. In the 1970s the group expanded and diversified to form a unique international group with more than 45,000 employees active around four core sectors: Construction, commercial, investments and real estate. All sectors claim to take into consideration the communities in which they operate and to make CSR part of their decision making process. The most common forms of support are adjusting work schedules, providing time off without pay, and allowing access to company facilities and equipment.

The?Dubai Islamic Bank was established in 1975 and since that date?has made a significant contribution to a broad range of charitable organizations and community initiatives. In particular, the bank continues to play a leading role in the area of Emiratisation, supporting and developing the professional development of the local UAE population. Also of special note, the bank has taken the initiative of establishing the DIB Foundation, aimed at serving the UAE community and supporting those who face hardships and require humanitarian need, especially in the health, education and housing.

The?National Bank of Abu Dhabi was?the first to formalize a CSR report in 2006. Its initiatives are mainly focused on helping underprivileged communities. Furthermore, the bank has a CSR policy embedded in its strategic plan. It accommodates and encourages employees to volunteer their time and effort to help in the CSR initiatives.

Conclusion

Finally, The Center for Responsible Business continues to explore new social research areas. The first ever survey on corporate community involvement revealed companies in Dubai continued relying on traditional aspects of corporate community involvement such as philanthropic donations ? cash donations (twenty percent) and in-kind donation (eighteen percent); sponsorship of community (the dominant method being sixteen percent for contributing to the community). The areas allocated the greatest proportion of companies? total contribution to community include healthcare (fifteen percent), sporting and recreation (fifteen percent), education (fourteen percent), and environmental issues (thirteen percent).

The results demonstrate that companies in Dubai are at the early stages of developing comprehensive management approaches to community involvement: 6% of companies have a formal commitment or policy on community involvement activities, 7% of companies have a strategic plan for community involvement, twelve percent of companies dedicated a department/officer to deal with community involvement programs or activities, and 6% of companies either have a communicate plan for community involvement or report their achievement.

The survey results revealed further signs that corporate volunteering in Dubai is at an early stage of development; few businesses (twenty-one percent) encouraged or accommodated employee volunteer activities. Companies support employee volunteering in different ways; forty-four percent of all businesses encourage employees to volunteer on their own time, and one quarter accommodate employee volunteer activities during regular working hours. The results further show that company support for employee volunteer activities tends to be responsive or reactive rather than strategic or proactive.

The most common forms of support are adjusting work schedules (twenty-nine percent), providing time off without pay (twenty-seven percent), and allowing access to company facilities and equipment (forty percent). Companies support a range of organizations and causes including education (twenty-six percent), health (twenty-four percent), overseas aid (twenty-four percent), and children and youth (nineteen percent). The survey findings revealed that lack of knowledge, time, and awareness are main reasons that kept companies from participating in volunteer activities.

It is clear from this short analysis that companies in Dubai and the UAE in general are engaged?and committed to CSR initiatives. Naturally, there still a lot to be done in this area, but for a relatively young country, the seven emirates became the UAE in December 2, 1971, the results are promising to say the least.
