Adoption Stories: Week 3 ? From the Heart

Raymond?s story shows the great need for families to adopt older children out of foster care and the power that LOVE has to change a life forever:

?Ok, to start, the story of my life has had many ups and downs when it comes to families. I really don?t know much of my biological family and I don?t know at what age I was given to the state. My earliest memories are of a foster family that I was with for about a month. After that, I remember being adopted with my 2 half-brothers and my sister by a mom and dad who already had a biological daughter. The mom tried her best to keep us all together after her husband left her. I can?t remember at what age this was, but it was when I was still young. On a teacher?s salary she was hard pressed to try and provide for all of us. Sadly, she had to let us all go.

One of my 2 half-brothers was adopted by a neighbor who was looking for a son and my other half-brother went to a friend of the family, as I understood it then. My sister and I went back into state custody and so back into to foster care. At this point I was about 9ish. I was sent to live with a foster family and it lasted for a few months before the state came back in and put me in state funded residential care facility.

I did get lucky with my next foster family though. They were an elderly couple who were very involved in a church and decided to take me in and foster me. I was with them from right before I turned ten to right after I turned 12. Needless to say boys at my age hardly ever find a family to adopt them so I figured I was stuck in going from foster home to foster home without having a real family. My foster parents were really good to me and would have adopted me but at that time the State of Arkansas did not allow people over 60 to adopt. Which we all wanted because they would have been a stable Christian home to come up in and to heal the holes that were left in my life from the past.

When I first met the people I now call Mom and Dad, I didn?t even know they were possible parents looking to adopt a boy. I met them while I was at a friend?s house for play time, so pretty much, I ignored them and was myself without any charming or trying to impress on my part. But still they saw something in me that they liked and decided to try and get to know me more and to develop a relationship.

After I found out that they were looking to adopt, I thought that they wouldn?t want me, but inside I was secretly hoping that it would happen. Well as most adoption processes go, you have a six month period of living with them before you can sign the papers to be adopted. During this six months, I was introduced into what a good strong family should be like, and I loved it. I could see that here with this family I was going to be happy, accepted and loved even though they didn?t really know me.

At the end of that six month period I could tell that this was the family I had always wanted. But like most things, it would take both parties to agree on it. I knew I wanted it, and I could see that they wanted it to. The day we went to sign the adoption papers was the happiest time of my life? to be able to get a family that actually choose me to be with them and one that I had always hoped for and dreamed of having. It was a choice they made not because I was thrust on them, but because they actually wanted to be a family. I was raised in a strong Christian faith with lots of love and support which taught me what I needed to become and that raised me to be the person I am today. And in that setting, I was able to grow up with what I had always wanted but never really had up till then. I am so thankful to my Mom, Dad (Mary and Rodney), and the rest of my family that taught me what family is all about. Love. Because that is what we have.

I was not a son born of blood but of choice and love and that is exactly what I needed and it bonded us closer because of it. I have to say that being adopted is the best thing that happened to me and I strongly recommend anyone looking to adopt a child to do it. It means a lot to us and from what my parents have told me that it is very fulfilling, rewarding and well worth it.?- Raymond Jackson

From Anton?s mom, Dana: Anton wrote his story for National Adoption Day. I shared it in our church here in Russia, where we live and serve as missionaries. I first met Anton while teaching Bible lessons in his orphanage. (For more information about their ministry in Russia, please visit Dana?s Blog)

?When I lived in the orphanage, I felt lonely and abandoned. I didn?t like being alone and I didn?t feel like I was special. And I was surprised when mom came and she gave me a toy car, and I thought that she would be my mom. I thought she was pretty and kind. And when she told us about Jesus, and how He came to the earth and died or our sins, and how God created the world, and how He flooded the earth when people sinned. When I heard this, I found an answer to my questions; ?Am I alone?? ?Am I special?? ?Does anyone love me??

Mama took me from the orphanage for visits on my birthday, Christmas and during the Summer at first. The first time Sveta and I went home with mom, I felt peace, joy and comfort. The first thing mom did when we got home was to put us down for a nap. Mom had a room ready for us with bunk beds, two dressers, toys, clothes and a lot of other things. Mom also took me to get an operation. When we went to the hospital, I said ?We could live here.?, even though there was only 2 small beds and a sink in the room.

A couple weeks before Christmas, mom adopted me and Sveta. I was indescribably excited! And God is healing my heart little by little. Oh, how God loves and values every child! And I know that if it weren?t for God, none of this would have happened. I know I have a mom and other kids don?t. But I don?t want this to be a reason for me to get proud, but rather to be compassionate and pray for the orphans who do not yet have a family.? -Anton

I recently ?met? Samantha on Facebeook, and asked her to share her adoption story! I?m so grateful our paths have crossed:

??Not flesh of my flesh, nor bone of my bone but still miraculously my own.? This quote lies across the top of one of the single most important documents I own?my adoption card! We live in a culture of adoption. Many families have embraced and crossed cultural boundaries to welcome in a child not ?of? them, but instantly a part of them. A family is not only bred, but also built.

I was born to a substance-abusing mother and a non-existent father; quite ironic for being born on Fathers Day, June 17, 1990. I grew up in a dirty old trailer that consisted of constant verbal, physical, and emotional abuse. Drugs, alcohol and men were the normal in our little blue makeshift home. My mother was often running off with a ?friend?, leaving her three girls to be cared for by our grandmother. Grandma wouldn?t have won any awards for ?Grandma of The Year?; she was nearly as abusive as our mother. But the one place where she did become a beacon of hope was when she decided to no longer care for my sisters and I.

Grandma took us to a little church, the kind you see in a painting, called Glorious Church of God. She told the preacher on a Sunday that she was tired of looking after us girls and would be willing to give us up to someone in the church; if they wanted us. Luckily, an older woman, an angel in disguise, heard and went home to tell her granddaughter of the situation. I left church that Sunday scared and confused; I knew I was unloved, but I didn?t know I was totally abandoned at heart.

A week and a half later on a Wednesday night in January of ?95, I met Love face to face for the first time: Tony and Kim Smith. Two smiling faces looking right at me! Interested in me! And I in them. They talked to my sisters and I for a little while out on the side of the church. Before they left, I asked them if I could go with them right then, but they told me ?soon we will meet again.?

Eventually our ?Love Story? began! My sisters, Savannah and Sara, and I began to go back and forth between the Smith?s and our trailer. My mother had not made this time with the Smith?s altogether easy; in fact, she was very rude and hasty. Never knew when she?d call and demand us girls? back. However since I was the youngest and not in school, I was able to visit more often?even sleep over! After a few short months, I started calling Kim and Tony, Mom and Dad. Tony cautioned me to not do that and when I would tell my older sister Sara to do the same, she would reply, ?I can?t, it doesn?t feel right.? I could have cared less what I was being told. I knew I had never experienced love and this was the real deal. Shortly after coming to the conclusion in my young mind that parents love, I was determined to make Tony and Kim all mine, but my fantasy came to a screeching halt.

I remember like it was yesterday hearing Kim and Tony talk somberly and then being escorted to the car after hugging Kim goodbye. As I sat in the backseat, I tilted my little head up and asked Tony, ?Is that what it looks like when you cry?? When no words were spoken, I lost it. My heart was breaking into a million little pieces. I began to throw a fit and cry violently, all the way to the door of the trailer. Life seemingly had ended in my heart.

When Tony returned home, he told Kim he couldn?t take it any longer that the stress of not knowing what was always coming next was too hard on him and their marriage. But Kim couldn?t let go. A few months had passed and my mother contacted the Smith?s stating, ?If they want me, they can have me.? They fought for adoption and of course being the woman that she is my mother had to make things difficult. Persistency pays off though. After all the mess of court, dealing with my biological parents and much more?the day had finally arrived!

May 23, 1996 I arrived to the door the of judges chambers. I remember sitting anxiously waiting to see the smile come across the judge?s face in completion of the ruling and the next thing I know I was taking my very first family photo! I had finally become Samantha Rose Rachelle Smith. I was living the dream.

Life has moved quite quickly since that day. My sister, Savannah, was never adopted, but my sister Sara was adopted into Tonys brother?s family. How many sisters can say they are also cousins! Today, I am 22 and in the first stages of stepping into my life dream. My calling began the moment I was born, although it took me years to fully understand it. Bringing justice to the fatherless is my life mission. God is so faithful and has blessed my family beyond measure. Many times people will not believe me when I say I am adopted because I look so much like my parents. It?s amazing how truly perfect the plans of the Father are! I am so honored to be the proud daughter of amazing parents who are pastors, this year marks 25yrs in ministry, and have truly shown me the Father?s love. Mom and Dad, I love you! I literally owe my life to you and I couldn?t show it to you any better way than by serving the Lord and pursing my calling! Thank you for never giving up on loving me!? ? Samantha Smith

I met Rebekah soon after I moved to Kansas City, through the children?s ministry where I was teaching.

?My name is Rebekah Sue Ariana Allen. I was born in Whittier California and adopted at six days old. There are six kids in my family, the younger three are adopted. I?m nineteen the oldest of the younger three. I have one brother by my birth parents a year younger than me.

My adoption is open, I have always had contact with my birth parents. Actually I got to see them this past week. Although goodbyes are hard, I have to say I have the best of both worlds. As a child it?s not always the easiest thing to understand the whys to everything. Although personally my strength in those younger was only came from the Lord. My understanding and faith in knowing my Lord had a plan and purpose for my life was beyond comforting. I can be a worry wart but I had peace in that fact he never gives us something we can handle.

I was raised in Nipomo California until I was thirteen. Then I was stripped of the title of a Cali Girl when we moved to Kansas City Missouri. Which as a new teenager of course I was not pleased about it. Although it was where I need to be. I was mature enough to know that it was what the Lord had for us. If I?m being honest I had a peace about it. I of course fell in love with KC, it just took a while. Then after falling in love with this place I proudly called home. Another move landed us in the boot heel of Missouri, a little town called Portageville.

My parents have been married for forty years. So to say the least I always had a strong support system. I must say they did well in teaching us that home is always where family is. Our moves where always under strange family circumstances though they always worked out. When we don?t always understand God always has a purpose.

Adoption has changed my life I would be a completely different person if I hadn?t been. Wouldn?t trade my life for anything. Not saying I haven?t had hard times. Although I was the most spoiled, that still mattered none. The enemy had a strong hold in my life, he lied to me and made me believe I wasn?t loved. Which was so far from the truth. That lie alone messed me up.

Coming out of my teenage years, I can say now without shame that lie made me struggle with my purity. Even a year ago I don?t think I could completely admit that. I had so much shame because I was one that was so aware and told how important saving yourself for marriage was. As a child you have dreams of what you want to be. All I wanted in life was to be wife and even more so a mother. One that walked in purity and by faithfulness. Not only a mother but a spiritual leader to guide them in a path of righteousness.

So with my struggles they have only made me stronger in my faith. My hope and prayer is that my lessons I have learned in my life in staying pure, keep my own kids and other from making those same mistakes.

If I could leave you with anything from my story would be that, adoption is Gods answer for abortion. That God is merciful and will forgive.

?For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.?
-Jeremiah 29:11?

Katyana Reed is the daughter of my dear friend Kerry Reed, you may have heard her sister Syndey?s story earlier this month. I am so grateful for Katyana?s willingness to share her story. In her words you will see the painful struggle that children can face as they walk through healing. As you read, please pray for Katyana and children like her who are asking God to help their hearts to heal from years of wounds and pain. Katyana, I love you.

?Adoption?
It is a journey that has good times and a lot of hard times.

My name is Katyana and I am thirteen and a half years old. I was placed in foster care with my younger brother and sister when I was three years old. I am glad my foster mother adopted my siblings and me almost three years later. But it?s not easy. It wasn?t easy when I lived with my birth mother and it?s not easy living with my adoptive mother.

Adoption can be very hard for a lot of kids for they have to get used to a new way of life and a new home. The rules are very different. Disobeying your new parents doesn?t mean they will stop loving you. New parents love their new child no matter what happens. At least, that?s been true with me.

Opening up your heart is hard for some adopted boys and girls especially to those they love. They will try and try to open that heart but it is so very hard. Some adopted kids have a hard time because hearts can be ugly. It is so hard for me to open my heart because I think that those I love will see my ugly heart and won?t want me anymore and will put me back into foster care. I don?t understand yet why I steal and why I lie to everyone all the time. But I know it has to do with my ugly heart and keeping it hidden. My adoptive mom says my heart is beautiful and that God thinks it is too. I don?t believe this yet.

Don?t give up on your adopted kid. Adopting a kid may seem wonderful but sometimes it?s not. It all might take awhile to understand and sometimes an adoptive kid may love you and then hate you. But don?t give up loving them.

Visiting a birth mom or a birth father may be kind of hard for them especially if they don?t get the choice whether to see them or not. It?s scary. I wish people would remember that kids who are adopted have birth parents who could be scary sometimes.

I loved my adoption party. I loved getting a new last name. This was so important to me. It was a big day and it meant I had a new mom forever that loved me and I have the same last name as her last name. I also got to get a new first and middle name. This was very important to me too. It helped me remember that I was changing and growing in a family that loved me. Also, having a keepsake box is very important to me so I can remember the years I am loved.

Appreciate your adopted kid because the years go by fast. You will eventually realize how much you miss them when they are gone. And nothing can stop an adoptive parent from loving their adopted child. Every time they think of their very hard times, they will realize what was so hard. Don?t give up on them. Adopted kids are trying their best to reach their goals and make their adoptive parents proud.? -Katyana Reed (Katyana?s sister, Sydney shared her story in week one)

I have know Sierra since she was a little girl. She is precious to our family, and was one of our favorite babysitters back in the day when our first three were little. It has been a privilege to watch her grow and become an incredible woman of God. I love her!

?In 1986 I was born to a woman who hadn?t planned for me and couldn?t take care of a baby. I lived with her until my younger brother Josh was born a year later. Once Josh was born we were placed into Foster Care.

For the next few years Josh and I lived with numerous families and in many unhealthy environments. Abuse was a part of my life until I was adopted into a great, Christian family at age 6, Jere and Julie White adopted my brother and I and had previously adopted 2 older boys who were cousins. My mom told me that the months previous to my adoption, (when we lived with them as foster kids) every night I would pray and ask God to please let them adopt us. When I was adopted I was shown lots of love that was unfamiliar to me. I reacted positively to it and thought that my life would be a fairy tale from that day on.

When I was 6 I asked Jesus to be my Savior. The first time I ever sang in front of people was at a Christmas program at age 6. My mom had me sing Silent Night and I learned all the verses by memory. Afterwards my mom a got a prophetic word that God would use me as a Singer for His glory.

When I was 8 I was sexually abused for 4 years. I became more introverted and found my friends in books and movies. I was rejected by my peers in school and became the object of bullying.

I was treated so meanly that in a sense I became almost immune to the harsh words I would hear. Because of everything in my past I was a hurt, rejected, and abused, angry mess. I began to take my anger out on my mom and do poorly in school. However, I excelled in putting on a mask and being the ?perfect little Christian girl?. I was the ?Go-to? person for anything musical, if anything needed done people came to me to get it done.

I began to find my identity in serving and doing things rather than finding myself in Christ. I truly loved God and wanted to serve Him but was so hurt and angry I never really let Him take control. I began to immerse myself in ministry without working through all the hurt from my past. As I got older my mom began to notice this and asked me to go to therapy, which I did. It helped and God began to tear at my heartstrings and show me the depths of His love.

I rededicated my heart to Jesus when I was 15 and began to go hardcore after His heart. I began to lead worship and began tinkering around on my keyboard. It wasn?t until 2005 when I was in Fire in the Night at the International House of Prayer in KC, MO when the Lord did a great work in my heart in helping me overcome the pain. I was in Track 1 when we did the Deep/Inner Healing course for 3 days and it was intense. I began to ask God to work in me and change me and do what He needed to do. I left a changed person. A week later I was in the Prayer Room and was supposed to sing that night but for some reason I asked for a friend to sub for me. I was sitting in the back on the floor praying when someone was on the mic and said, ?You cannot love others or truly love God until You love Yourself.? As I heard that I began to weep and weep for 3 hours. God began to tear another layer of hurt and rejection off of me.

My life has held a lot of pain, hurt, and rejection, but God has been so faithful to me. I am one of the few children to be adopted into Christian families and am so grateful for the Hand of God on me.

Last year (2011) my birth mother found me on Facebook and I learned that I am the oldest of 7 kids! My brother Josh and I have met 2 of our (birth) siblings and are still in touch with them. I hope to adopt kids someday. I have seen firsthand the power of giving children a Christian home to grow up in any my heart breaks for kids who are not adopted into families as great as mine is.?- Sierra White

I am blessed to share yet another one of my niece?s beautiful adoption stories. Keyolla is the daughter of my husbands brother Derek and his wife Renee?.

?My name is Keyolla Crow, I am 21 years old. My parent?s Derek and Renne Loux adopted me and my twin sister Teyolla at the age of 10 from the Marshall Islands.

I grew up in a very poor environment and didn?t have a good stable life. My birth mom was a wonderful mom to me and my 4 siblings. She did the typical things that moms do for their kids. We were always fed and groomed and she taught us our manners. We lived in a shack and were very poor. My mom had two jobs, one was to take care of us but she also went to work at a hotel as a maid in downtown every night just before sunset.

She did her best to be a good, supportive, caring, and loving mother to us kids. My dad was kicked out of our house when I was 3 years old. I remember him being very controlling to my mom and very abusive to her. I have never seen my mom so unhappy as she was after he left us. Life was good for us in a way, but at the same time us kids needed a dad around.

But things started to get worse. I was 5 when my aunts oldest son started to play with me and cousins. It all started out with playing horse back or piggy backs, but as the years went on, it went from that to sexual stuff. I remember being very confused about what he was doing to me and cousins. I was being molested by my cousin and I didn?t even have a dad figure to go and talk to about it. I was so scared to tell my mom what my cousin had done to me. In my country everything is ?hush hush? about things like this, and you are expected to keep everything to yourself. I knew in my heart what he was doing to me and my cousins was wrong, but I felt helpless.

When I was 9 ?, (I can still remember it to this day), my mom left me and my siblings. I didn?t really realize what was going on at that time, but she told us that she was going to be staying with her guy ?friend for awhile. We would live in our house alone with my older sister Lilly who was at the time 11 years old. At night, we were scared and hoped that in the morning we would be alive. The Lord really protected us from harm and he watched over us. One night we, were very scared so we decided to sing a hymn called ?It Is Well With My Soul?. I remember feeling something in my heart but didn?t know what it was. We all felt peace and comfort, and I know know it was the Lord. Even though we didn?t really go to church and were never taught about Him.

Terry Sasser took us in for couple months. He really showed me and my siblings kindness and loved us as his own. One day, he sat us down. He told us that his sister Renee? and her husband Derek along with their two daughter?s Sophia and Michaela wanted us to be apart of their family. Of course we said yes! Just the thought of having a family, who would love and protect, treat us as their own?. We were both thrilled!

Five months later my new family arrived at the airport. I was very shy, but was really happy to meet them! We got very close as the weeks went on, and then the day came when Tey and I had to leave our loved one?s and homeland. We were both crying with joy and sadness. We arrived in Indiana, and there was our new family waiting at the airport to greet us. It was so good to have met them all, but every thing around us was a culture shock.

Through the years of healing, comfort by Lord and my parents, I have learned a lot through the good and bad, by the grace of our Father and Lord Jesus Christ. If it wasn?t for Him who hand picked me and my sister, my cousin, and friends to be adopted, we both would have ended up without a hope and a bright future.

Today, I am a changed woman who loves the Lord and is now married to Eric Crow, an awesome, incredible man who?s heart is on fire for the Lord. I am just blessed beyond words.

I thank the Lord and my parents for giving me a second chance. I have learned to love, forgive, heal, and to respect others. I am so grateful to my Dad who is with Lord, for being such a good father to me and my 11 siblings, and a great husband to my mom.

I love you Dad and Mom, thank you for loving me.? -Keyolla Crow

Shocking Numbers In Childhood Obesity Your Health Journal | Your ...

From WTNH 8?..

Childhood obesity is a national epidemic and the numbers are shocking.

?About a third of the children in our state, kindergarten and third graders are overweight or obese,? Dr. Jewell Mullen of the Conn. Dept. of Public Health said.

These are alarming numbers, so a forum on childhood obesity was held to try to fix it.

?We develop legislative options that stress the connections between better health and better academic acheivement, making action against childhood obesity an education as well as health imperative,? Lucy Holan, the Executive Director of End Hunger Conn. said.

A study by the Department of Public Health looked at kids in Kindergarten and third grade.

The statistic that one in three kids is overweight goes for boys and girls equally, but there is a big disparity among the races. Only 27 percent of white kids are overweight or obese, compared to 41 percent of black kids and 43 percent of Hispanics.

Childhood obesity is a topic for the state government because those fat kids grow up to be fat adults and fat adults are prone to getting diseases that can be very expensive to treat.

?Including heart attack, stroke diabetes, cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, all leading to premature death,? Sen. Donald Williams, the Senate President Pro Tempore, said.

Digital technologies in education - In recent years there has been a great increase in the interest in how digital technologies in the field of education and academic research can be such a useful tool and also a crucial way of testing the educational practice itself. The development of these technologies has been pushed through with the contribution of many different disciplines. The tools that have already been developed, and the potential of all the new devices, could be of great value to add to educational activity in every field and also an opportunity to rethink the ways in which to produce and share knowledge. Of course it is still an ongoing process, but some goals have been achieved, concerning digital publishing for educational purposes.
Both the conferences that INC has organized in the past years, Unbound book 2011 and Boek uit de band 2012, have treated this issue in a very complete way (for example, the conference session called ?E-readers in Dutch Education? moderated by Joost Kircz) and the e-Learning research field is one of the most innovative and lively at this moment.
We are talking about digital tools and digital publishing for education and academic research.
What is the role of visual arts and design in these fields? And what about design and arts educational programs in the digital age?

Education for publishing - What I find curious is that we are actually living in the upcoming era of self publishing, in which it seems that the problem is only about giving the tools to enable the process and then things, like the making of a book or a magazine, can be easily done by anybody ? with all the debate generated about the increase in knowledge production due to instant on demand replication. This is, in my opinion, exactly the burning question:
What could be the meaning of a publishing class in the age of DIY practices?
Related to book design, what is the role of the teacher now that he/she has lost the complete authority and expertise on the subject, because digital publishing is a field that hasn?t been fixed in specific features yet?
Is it right to start seeing teachers and students in a different and more collaborative hierarchy?

The publishing process in the field of visual arts - If we get more into the world of visual arts and graphic design and the educational practice in these fields, of course we need to focus more on the medium ? we can call it book or whatever. There is no doubt that this particular approach could be one of the still missing points of view on digital publishing that can contribute to the proper development of it, even in its educational aspect. So we question about on what is a book and which shape it?s going to have in the near future, however, from the specific point of view of visual arts, we could also ask which is the right way to teach the entire publishing process, from the first idea to the final shape of the ?object?.

Publishing Class 2011 - poster for a workshop

Defining the publishing process - So, the first step would be: What do we mean by publishing process? First of all, I think the best way is to start with a wide approach, trying to set a framework about how to teach the whole publishing process in a way that includes all its phases, all its aspects and all the possible shapes that a publishing course can take ? for example, a journalism class or a book design class.
What are both the steps and the different areas in educational practice and what could be the main principles and guidelines for teaching in the publishing field?

Teaching journalism - An insightful point of view comes from the field of journalism? and some very functional ways of setting the problem came from a paper that I recently read, written by Raoul Boers ? lecturer in Content Management and Digital Culture at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, who? I am going to meet next week ? and other lecturers from different universities: [R. Boers, E. Ercan, L. Rinsdorf, R. W. Vaagan, From Convergence to Connectivism: Teaching Journalism 2.0, Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies, Volume: 2 Issue: 4, October 2012].

The paper sets the key concept of media convergence and how it leads to fundamental changes in the education for the journalistic field under three sub-topics, ?the changes in the curricula, the changes in? course syllabi, and the changes in the technological infrastructures of the academic institutions?.
?Cross-media news writing and storytelling are different from producing for broadcast media and print news [?] In writing across media one adds elements to this process by creating a non-linear approach, which means that instead of developing a rigidly structured single narrative you choose to navigate through the elements of story by using a combination of text, still photographs, video clips, audio, graphics, and interactivity such as polls or blogs on a website in such a fashion that each medium is complementary.?

The paper goes on to explain how a journalism course can be structured, observing how some classes have been arranged around the concepts of media convergence, collaboration and user-generated content, identifying two main aspects of the process, which I find particularly effective: ?The integrative aspect (the merging of different technologies and industries to create new forms of cultural product and new modes of production and delivery e.g. iPhones, iPads, androids) and the divergence aspect (the flow of content across multiple media platforms, the cooperation between multiple media industries and the migratory behavior of media audiences, who will go anywhere for desired entertainment experience).?

How to frame a publishing class - There are several things to be previously defined in order to frame a publishing class:
A. The different profiles involved in the process;
B. The different activities and how they get integrated in the process (integrative aspect);
C. What the product is like and what the different platforms for it are (divergence aspect).
Finally, there are also kinds of product that are different on another level: beyond the media convergence aspect, there are indeed several different objects that have their own features and each one needs a different approach because it triggers a different process. There is a difference if I want to make a book for a novel, a news paper, a monthly magazine, an artist?s book etc. This doesn?t mean that they couldn?t be interacting with each other, but I think it is also important to set some specifics for each, to define better the market, the user, the medium and so on.
Another aspect to analyze, following these that I have explained above, is:
How to integrate technology in the process of teaching for publishing? Both in the phases of the process and for the different activities, profiles, platforms, products and objects etc.

Design class for publishing and publishing class for visual arts - There are many examples of studies about how digital technologies are embodied in the process of publishing in journalism and in the field of academic writing for several disciplines, and some education programs are completely conceived in this way.
But I?m afraid that the point for art and design is always the same: Why is this issue so complicated to frame and even not so taken into account in the field of the making of visual arts and the making of educational programs for visual arts? I see two main reasons: one is because the digital format and process has not been explored much sufficiently in book design and this is actually a consequence of the second reason: there is such a strong paper tradition in all the design and art parameters, rules, limits, and possibilities there are changing fast in technologies, but so slowly in the concepts. This makes sense also for the newspaper and the academic essay formats, but much more so for books because the design and art traditions have always been seen primarily as a their own visual product.
As we tried to identify the publishing process from an educational point of view following some examples in the journalistic field, we could ask the same questions and try to set the same steps and levels of arrangement for a book design course. But the specific challenge in this field should be indeed how to deal with the wall of such a strong paper and typographic tradition in graphic design and how to translate it into a digital environment.

Werkplaats Tipografie

The dialectic aspect of the teaching practice - What I also see as a decisive key concept, not to forget in an experimental phase such as it is, is that the dialogue between two different generations and roles (students/teachers) could be an interesting starting point for the research on how to make a book today, observing how this dialogue can actually affect the design process.
So the teachers could be seen as the ones that know how to do it properly in a more traditional way, and the students, the so-called digital-natives, could be the ones who have the right amount of ?ignorance? and openness to new technologies to break the rules of the book and see it in a new way, as it actually has always been in the past ? looking at, for example, the work of the pioneer of the New Wave movement in graphic design, Wolfgang Wiengart and his totally unconventional usage of the photographic film in typography, in the context of a strong tradition as the Swiss one was in the 50s and 60s. This is just one of the many examples of breaking the rules in graphic design, using a particular technology in a diverse way.
However, the dialectic aspect of the teaching practice is something that has always been there and it?s what makes education not only an activity to educate someone who is younger and less expert than us, but also a way to come up with new ideas, what makes a discipline itself evolve, starting from both positions, teacher?s and student?s. How to take advantage of this dialogue to re-define the book as such?

Wolfgang Weingart - experiments with letterings

The state of education in graphic design and visual arts - All these issues could help in having an idea of what the state of the art in the education for publishing is, both in the design and art practices and in the creating-content activities, but also to set some anchor points that could be useful to have a clear idea of all the steps achieved, in order not to be run over by the times changing so fast in terms of new media, new technologies and, in general, new behaviour.
As many designers and visual artists are also educators and they carry out a huge part of their research through the teaching practice, it?s interesting to talk with them about the educational aspect of their profession, because they can directly see what?s going on in the educational field from the point of view of someone who is actually making visual communication.
Many of them point out that they have the feeling that what we teach/learn in classes is to be a professional that could be just expired or be totally different in the next few years; this is true especially in the design field, looking at all the new and specific skills that a designer needs to have. Probably the world is not seeking the old-school-designer anymore, the designer has to become also a developer, or on the other hand, a manager, a critic, a curator etc. or maybe someone more like a director that makes all the parties interact in the proper way. But this is of course a very controversial issue: Are we moving towards a more specialized or a more generic kind of profession in the design field? Can the dialectic aspect of education in some ways contribute to solve this ambiguity and how?

Students and teachers in comparison - in order to study more closely these issues of book design, artist?s book and the educational aspects of both in the digital age, in the next interviews we?ll ask these questions directly to students and teachers.

? Session one will be two focus group interviews ? students and teachers together ? in two Dutch institutes, one is a school of graphic design and typography: Werkplaats Typografie, based in Ahrnem; and one is a course of publishing for visual art: Publishing Class 2012, the two year program designed for the Dutch Art Institute MFA ArtEZ by Casco - Office for Art, Design and Theory.

? Session two will be two single interviews in the field of journalism publishing, one to a student: Lars B?hm, developer of the magazine Uncovered; one to a teacher: Raul Boers, Amsterdam University of Applied Science.

Bucs beat Panthers for 4th straight win

By STEVE REED

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:37 p.m. ET Nov. 18, 2012

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are starting to look and talk like a legitimate playoff contender.

The Bucs had to work a little extra to keep their playoff surge alive Sunday. Josh Freeman threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Clark in overtime to cap the Buccaneers' 27-21 comeback win over the Carolina Panthers.

It was Freeman's third touchdown pass of the game for the Bucs (6-4), who have won five of their last six to pull into playoff contention.

But rather than celebrating their dramatic win, Clark talked afterward about learning from it.

"We learned a lesson today that we can't just show up and win a game," Clark said. "I hope guys will get it. We're lucky it's not a loss. I hope we go back and look at the film and say, `Hey we didn't play well.' Sure, we played well enough to make some plays to win at the end, but to get where we want to go, that's not good enough football."

Meanwhile, the Panthers (2-8) would love to have a win any way they can get it.

Carolina has lost seven of its last eight. The Panthers held a fourth-quarter lead in five of their last six defeats before fading in the final seconds.

"It's been the story of our season," said Cam Newton, who threw for 252 yards and a touchdown to fall to 8-18 as an NFL starter.

When asked where this loss ranked among this season's meltdowns, Newton snapped, "I'm not answering no more questions about where this one ranks."

Carolina appeared to have the game in hand when Newton connected on a 29-yard touchdown strike to Brandon LaFell to go up 21-10 with six minutes left in regulation.

But after a 40-yard field goal by Connor Barth, the Panthers' offense couldn't put the game away and had to punt.

Freeman quickly led the Bucs 80 yards on seven plays in 50 seconds, despite not having any timeouts. Along the way, the Bucs benefited from a personal foul penalty on linebacker Thomas Davis for hitting a defenseless receiver.

Freeman finished the drive with a perfectly thrown 24-yard touchdown pass to Vincent Jackson between three defenders with 12 seconds left. He went back to Jackson for a 2-point conversion on a slant route to send it into overtime.

In overtime, the Bucs won the coin toss and moved quickly down the field with Freeman finding an open Clark on a wheel route along the left sideline for the winner.

"You've got to love it when the linebacker swears as you're heading up field," Clark said with a laugh.

Freeman said it was a play the Bucs worked on all week and he's glad that was the call.

"When we got to overtime we stepped into the huddle and everybody was ready to go and we started talking like, `Hey let's just execute one play at a time and do our jobs and try to get out of this thing with a touchdown,"' Freeman said.

The Bucs came in as one of the hottest teams in the league, having scored an average of 35.6 points per game during the past five games. Freeman had thrown 13 touchdown passes and only one interception in those games.

But after Tampa Bay jumped to a 10-0 lead the Panthers' defense shut them down for most of the remainder of the three quarters, forcing three turnovers. A 74-yard interception return for a touchdown by Captain Munnerlyn and a key fumble by rookie Doug Martin on a fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line loomed large.

Trailing 14-10, the Bucs appeared ready to take the lead after driving 15 plays to the Carolina 1.

But on fourth down, coach Greg Schiano went for the touchdown instead of the field goal and linebacker Davis plowed into Martin, forcing the ball out near the goal line. Fellow linebacker Luke Kuechly, the team's first-round draft pick, recovered in the end zone for a touchback.

Officials reviewed the play to see if Martin got in, but the call stood.

The Panthers seized the momentum when Newton led the team 80 yards for a score to build a 21-10 lead.

But once again, the Panthers couldn't finish.

Second-year coach Ron Rivera, whose seat only grew hotter after the loss, said the game was all about missed opportunities. Rivera said the loss "is right up there at the top" in terms of toughest ones to swallow.

"This is about as bad as it gets," he said. "The bad part is when you have opportunities to close someone out with a four-minute offense, but you can't take negative plays. That's a tough one."

NOTES: Freeman has now thrown 16 touchdown passes in the last six games. ... Wide receiver Steve Smith injured his hand and defensive end Charles Johnson his head during the game, but both returned. ... Martin had 138 yards rushing for the Bucs. ... Carolina had 97 yards rushing after being held to 10 in the last meeting with the Bucs in the season opener.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- The University of Cincinnati has been in talks with Chinese officials about adding a medical school campus in that country.

College of Medicine Dean Tom Boat recently updated university trustees about the discussions. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports (http://cin.ci/Wbngq8 ) that tens of millions of dollars would be needed in donations to make the UC-branded campus a reality.

But supporters point to the potential for new growth and revenue in the world's largest nation by population. China is the leading source for international students for UC, with 962 Chinese students enrolled this year.

The university already has collaboration and project agreements in China.

Boat emphasized the plans are in very early stages.

Hot Air | Turbo Tax Tim: We should ?absolutely? eliminate the debt ceiling

Yes, by all means ? let?s just blithely remove the mechanism forcing us to have a discussion about our whopping and ever-mounting $16 trillion in national debt, because we can?t get our fiscal act together. That pesky ol? chestnut. From the WFB:

China?s new carbon copy leaders

The Chinese Communist Party?s (CCP) 18th Party Congress that has just concluded in Beijing offered a rare chance to observe what is happening behind the scenes in Chinese politics.

China has a non-democratic regime and the transfer of power at the highest level is an incredibly sensitive time for the authorities. It is also fraught with difficulties.

In 1989, following the Tiananmen Square Massacre, the party?s old guard held an impromptu and unofficial meeting during which it decided upon the next two generations of leaders, Jiang Zemin (???), party general secretary from 1993 to 2003, and Hu Jintao (???), party general secretary from 2003 to the present. This decision was based upon traditional, rather than institutional authority within the party.

The 18th Party Congress could be said to be the first transfer of power based upon neither charismatic nor traditional authority, but rather based on background factional jostling.

Another aspect that sets this power transfer apart from previous ones is that it is no longer set against a backdrop of rapid economic growth. The new leader will not be able to put off addressing the stark contradictions that exist within the country. He will also be faced with a depressed global economy.

Opinion on the direction China should take is polarized within academic circles, society and even within the CCP itself, reflected in the harsh struggle over policy lines favored by different individuals within the party leadership.

It is against this backdrop that a rather unusual sequence of events occurred last year. In April, following the annual National Committee of the Chinese People?s Political Consultative Conference and plenary sessions of the National People?s Congress, there was the incident involving Wang Lijun (???) and Bo Xilai (???), which gave some amazing insights into the infighting among senior party leadership.

Then there was the case of Chen Guangcheng (???), exposing the absurdities of inflated powers, and their abuse, within the CCP?s Political and Legal Committee.

Meanwhile, Bo is being kept out of the public eye as part of the shuanggui (??) extralegal detention and interrogation system for disgraced cadres. There has been an information blackout on how he is being dealt with.

However, in that short time the international media have been reporting how members of Xi Jinping?s (???) extended family have huge assets, just before Xi himself disappeared from public view, reportedly due to back problems.

Not long after Xi finally re-emerged came the news that the nominations of the seven new members of the Politburo Standing Committee had been confirmed in a meeting between Hu, Xi and Jiang, and just after this the decision was made to punish Bo with shuangkai (??), double expulsion ? from the party and from his administrative post. Just when everyone thought the excitement was over, another wave of incidents occurred.

Anti-Japanese protests erupted throughout China over the territorial dispute involving the Diaoyutai Islands (???) ? known as the Senkakus in Japan ? with Chinese chanting the slogan: ?The Diaoyutais belong to China.? Curiously, this slogan was sometimes followed with ?and Bo Xilai belongs to the people.?

More recently, and more shockingly, was the report in the New York Times that family members of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (???) had amassed a fortune. The Washington Post also reported that Xi?s ?back problems? were the result of his being hit by a chair when a meeting of the second generation ?princelings? got out of hand.

Bringing earlier prototypes (pictured above) to fruition, this massive up and comer cranks out resolutions of over 8 million pixels. Sammy is billing this titanic television as "the world's largest commercialized UHD LED TV," a claim that will likely be challenged soon. Thin on pricing and release details, the company did confirm that it will be on display at CES 2013. So, if you're currently denying yourself luxuries such as hot water and warm meals in hopes of saving up to snag a certain 84-inch UHD set, you might want to pump your brakes until you see what Samsung has up its sleeve in the months to come.

Eric Clapton's watch auctioned off for $3.6 million

A Patek Philippe wristwatch from the collection of musician Eric Clapton.

By Stephanie Nebehay , Reuters

An Asian collector bought a platinum chronograph Patek Philippe wristwatch owned by British rock guitarist Eric Clapton for 3.44 million Swiss francs ($3.63 million) at auction on Monday, Christie's said.

The "ultra-rare" reference 2499/100 by the Swiss luxury watchmaker, one of only two cased in platinum, was acquired by Clapton some 10 years ago, it said.?

It fetched a combined hammer price and commission that was in line with Christie's pre-sale estimate of 2.5-4.0 million francs while also setting a world record price for this reference at auction, it said in a statement on its semi-annual Geneva sale.?

"The Eric Clapton watch was bought by an Asian private collector," Christie's spokesman Cristiano de Lorenzo told Reuters, adding that the buyer had been in the room.?

But the top lot at the seven-hour sale was another platinum chronograph Patek Philippe, reference 2458, made in 1952 for legendary American collector J.B. Champion. It fetched n early 3.78 million Swiss francs and set a world record for a watch without complications, or features beyond the display of hours, minutes and seconds, it said.?

Precious Time, an investment watch fund launched by Luxembourg-based Elite Advisers, was the buyer, Christie's said in a statement.?

In all, 96 percent of the 315 lots on offer found new owners, netting 27.04 million Swiss francs ($28.52 million), the auction house owned by French billionaire Francois Pinault said.?

Clapton's Patek Philippe, made in the Swiss city in 1987, has a perpetual calendar with moon phases, as well as windows for day and month and dials for seconds and minutes.?

Most experts would rank it among the world's 10 most significant wristwatches that stand out for historical importance, mechanical complexity, beauty, original condition, rarity and superior provenance, Aurel Bacs, international head of Christie's watch department, said before conducting the sale.?

Clapton, the former Cream musician, last year sold more than 70 of his guitars at a charity auction in New York, raising $2.15 million for the Crossroads Centre drug and alcohol rehabilitation center that he founded in Antigua.?

Last month in London he sold an abstract painting by German artist Gerhard Richter at rival Sotheby's for $34.2 million, setting a new record for the price paid at auction for the work of a living artist.?

Antiquorum's sale of modern and vintage timepieces, held in Geneva on Sunday evening, netted 8.63 million Swiss francs ($9.10 million) for 485 lots sold out of 613 on offer, it said in a statement issued on Monday.

The top lot was a Rolex Single Red Prototype, known as the Sea Dweller Submariner, one of only six produced in 1967 for use by divers. It sold for 490,900 Swiss francs -- four time its pre-sale estimate -- in its first appearance at auction.?

"It is the highest price ever paid for a Rolex sport watch and for a Sea Dweller," Antiquorum said.

Israel fires warning shots at Syria over Golan shelling

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli forces fired into Syria on Sunday in what the military called a warning, after stray munitions from fighting between Syrian troops and rebels hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The incident, described by Israel Radio as the first direct engagement of the Syrian military on the Golan since the countries' 1973 war, highlighted international fears that Syria's civil war could ignite wider regional conflict.

An Israeli security source said the military fired in the direction of a Syrian army mortar crew that had launched a shell which overshot the Golan disengagement fence on Sunday, exploding near a Jewish settlement without causing casualties.

In a statement, the Israeli military said soldiers had "fired warning shots towards Syrian areas".

"The IDF (Israel Defence Force) has filed a complaint through the UN forces operating in the area, stating that fire emanating from Syria into Israel will not be tolerated and shall be responded to with severity," the statement said.

There was no immediate comment from the 1,000-man United Nations Disengagement Observer Force which patrols the area.

Spillover violence this month from Syria onto the Golan has jangled the nerves of Israelis worried that the once-quiet front will add to threats facing the Jewish state from Islamic militants in neighboring Lebanon, Gaza and Egypt's Sinai.

There have been similar worries in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon about incidents on their own borders with Syria, where forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have been battling rebels for 19 months.

"WE WILL RESPOND"

Interviewed by Israel's Army Radio earlier on Sunday, Defence Minister Ehud Barak was asked about public warnings he and another senior official issued to Assad last week to rein in Syrian sweeps against rebels near the Golan.

"The message has certainly been relayed. To tell you confidently that no shell will fall? I cannot. If a shell falls, we will respond," Barak said, without elaborating.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, also speaking before Sunday's mortar strike on the Golan, told his cabinet that Israel was "closely following what is happening on our border with Syria .. and (is) prepared for any development".

Israel captured the Golan in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed the strategic plateau in 1981, a move not recognized internationally. In all past peace talks with Israel, Syria has insisted on the Golan's return.

The two countries signed a disengagement agreement in 1974, a year after another Arab-Israeli conflict, and though they are still technically at war the Golan had been mostly quiet since.

Another Syrian mortar bomb, one of a salvo, struck a Golan settlement on Thursday but did not explode. Separately, Israel complained to the United Nations this month after three Syrian tanks entered the Golan demilitarized zone, and said one of its army jeeps had been hit by Syrian gunfire. No one was hurt.

Israel has tried to stay out of the insurgency next door, reluctant to be drawn into another war and unclear about whether a post-Assad Syria might prove more hostile.

But Barak has said he hopes the rebels will win, Assad will fall and "a new stage in the life of Syria will begin".

Israel's military chief, Lieutenant-General Benny Gantz, warned troops on the Golan Heights a week ago: "This is a Syrian issue that could become our issue."

The Liberal Order - Something for current and future college ...

?Technology is changing so much faster than we can teach or people can change their skills,? said Daniel Gitterman, professor of public policy at UNC-CH. ?We?ve just got a tremendous amount of uncertainty.?

That uncertainty is OK, said Randy Woodson, chancellor of N.C. State University.

?It?s difficult to say we need this many engineers, this many nurses,? he said, ?you know, to pigeonhole higher education based on precise workforce needs at the time. The value of public higher education is that we?re constantly reacting to changing needs in society, always attuned to the underpinning need for an educated citizenry.?

Woodson uses the example of Germany to paint a contrast to American higher education. There, students are put into a career pipeline early based on test scores. They are trained very well in apprenticeships, but students have very little flexibility.

?In this country, because of the way the system works, you?re able to continually reinvent yourself,? he said. ?And that is frustrating for us when we have kids change majors three times, but I think, I fundamentally believe, it?s one of the reasons why our country is one of the most innovative in the world....The education system allows for innovation.?

The major debate centers on whether students should learn more broadly how to think in college (referred to as "soft skills") or whether college should take on a more vocational/apprenticeship role and teach students specific skills currently in demand like engineering or accounting or economics. That's a great question. Unfortunately, at all levels of education in this country we do a horrible job of teaching students to think critically. Worse still, by the time they graduate high school the overwhelming majority of prospective college students are completely bored with school and uninterested in learning.

High Level Of Confidence Would Help In Making The Fantastic ...

We often do different types of exercises to make ourselves healthy and fit. Fitness is not at all achieved in a day or two. It is a continuous process where we all need to put conscious efforts in order to achieve that desired level of fitness. The fit and healthy levels of living will help us to concentrate in different matters. High level of concentration would definitely help us to achieve the desired level of satisfaction and in turn would help in increasing the confidence. There are different types of sports which are very helpful in this matter. These games would help in building the concentration as well as the confidence among the youth.

volejbal is one of such games where high level of physical fitness needs to be blended with the power of brain. Not only the physical strength but also the maximum use of brain is very important in this sport. The presence of mind and swiftness can be the key to success for a good player. So it is very important that a player should always be well equipped with high level of concentration and passion towards the game he is playing. Human body is built with different muscles and nerves; the maximum use of these muscles and nervous system is possible by a good sportsman. The sports personality should always work hard in keeping himself strong and healthy. The level of devotion should be the key to success. Sportsmen always follow strict diet chart as advised by their physical trainer and the dietician. The highest level of mental satisfaction is involved with different types of games. The physical effort that a player put while playing football, tennis or volejbal is undoubtedly spectacular and appreciable. In case of team games high team spirit is involved with. For example in case of volleyball there are two teams of six players each. When these two teams face each other they all take it as a team game and try to win it for their respective team. Also they need to follow different rules and regulations of the games.

Again it is also very important that the spirit of the game should never be defeated. The winners are always appreciated by the people but at the same time the players as well as the spectators should always keep it in mind that sportsman spirit is the main take away from any sport event. The feeling of togetherness and the respect to the players of the other team would help in creating the bonding towards the game as well as the sportsman sprit would be upheld. A game should always be a game and it is truth for an amateur as well as a professional sportsman. A confident well-built sportsman can be very good ambassador for his country and the game itself. A player is always heartily accepted by the general public and they can often help the political leaders to solve out different sensitive issues with regards to his or her country. From this we can clearly understand that a sportsman image is the real asset for the fantastic sports personality.
