Saudi Arabia executes 7 men after appeals rejected

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Saudi Arabia's official news agency says seven Saudi men convicted of theft, looting and armed robbery have been beheaded, a week after their families appealed to the king for clemency.

Human Rights Watch had called for the sentences to be canceled because the men were juveniles when they were arrested.

One of the men told The Associated Press earlier this month that he was only 15 when he was arrested as part of a ring that stole jewelry in 2004 and 2005. Nasser al-Qahtani said he was tortured to confess and had no access to lawyers.

The agency says Wednesday's executions took place in Abha, a city in the southern region of Asir.

The original sentences called for death by firing squad and crucifixion.

Woman who finished 2nd in 2012 takes Iditarod lead

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? An Alaska woman who finished second in last year's Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race grabbed the lead in the 1,000-mile race Saturday evening.

Aliy Zirkle of Two Rivers was the first musher out of the checkpoint at Kaltag, which is about 346 miles from the finish. The front-runners are expected to reach the finish line in the old gold rush town of Nome on Alaska's western coast early next week.

Teams have been traveling in deep snow followed by deep overflows in a trail on the Yukon River deteriorated by above-freezing temperatures. Some stretches also were marked by glare ice.

Zirkle, 43, took the lead from four-time champion Martin Buser, who was the first out of the previous checkpoint at Eagle Island early Saturday. The 54-year-old veteran from Big Lake, Alaska, dropped two dogs at Eagle Island.

Buser is hoping to be only the second musher to ever claim a fifth title in the race's 40-year-history. He was the first to reach Kaltag, arriving with 11 dogs at 2:24 p.m. Saturday.

Zirkle left Eagle Island more than three hours after Buser. Former Iditarod racer Sebastian Schnuelle said her team traveled faster for much of the day and she came within several miles of Buser before stopping her team to rest eight miles before Kaltag.

Schnuelle, who is traveling along the trail and keeping a blog on the Iditarod website, said he encountered Zirkle when he reached her by snowmobile.

"Her dogs had just finished a meal," he wrote. "When talking to her, she told me she did not want to run longer than 8 hrs, that is why she camped."

Heading into Kaltag, teams chasing Buser were traveling at faster speeds than his dogs, a possible indicator that his dogs needed a longer period of rest in Kaltag.

Buser tried a strategy early in the race that had many competitors shaking their heads, but he was hoping it would pay off by letting him get to Nome first. On the second day of the competitive portion of the race, Buser took his mandatory 24-hour rest at the checkpoint in Rohn after a blistering fast 170-mile run that had put him hours ahead of the other teams.

Since then, all the teams have taken their 24-hour rest.

Buser said he couldn't worry about the performance of others because he had no control over that.

"You got to just run it to the best of your abilities, not what other people are doing," he said Thursday in an Iditarod.com video. "It really just comes down to you and your dog team."

All mushers must take a second eight-hour layover at the checkpoint at White Mountain, 77 miles from Nome.

The first musher to reach Nome will win $50,400 and a new 2013 Dodge Ram pickup truck. The rest of the $600,000 purse will be split between the next 29 mushers to cross the finish line.

The race began with 66 teams at a ceremonial start in Anchorage March 2. The competitive start began Sunday in Willow. Five mushers have scratched, the latest being Chugiak veteran Michael Suprenant. Race officials said Suprenant scratched Saturday out of concern for his 12-dog team at the ghost town checkpoint of Iditarod.

Police: Delhi gang rape suspect kills self in jail

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Police said a man on trial for the gang rape and fatal beating of a woman aboard a New Delhi bus committed suicide in an Indian jail Monday, but his lawyer and family allege he was killed.

Ram Singh, who was accused of driving the bus on which the 23-year-old student was raped by a group of six men in December, was under suicide watch at New Delhi's Tihar Jail when he hanged himself with his own clothes at about 5:30 a.m., police officials said. His death is raising further questions about a criminal justice system already being criticized for failing to protect the nation's women.

Singh, 33, had been among five defendants facing the death penalty if convicted of the attack, which horrified Indians and set off national protests. A sixth accused is being tried and jailed separately because he is a juvenile.

India's deputy home minister, R.P.N. Singh, said an inquiry had been ordered into the suicide, according to the Press Trust of India.

"The inquiry is being conducted and it would be premature to make any statement about the details of the incident," said Vimla Mehra, the director general of the jail.

Ram Singh's family and lawyer alleged foul play in his death.

"There were no circumstances which could have led to Ram Singh committing suicide. There was no mental stress. He was very happy," his lawyer V.K. Anand said. Lawyers for the defendants had previously accused police of beating confessions out of the men.

Indian jails have a reputation for overcrowding, poor management and brutal treatment of inmates.

Ram Singh's father, Mangelal Singh, said his son had been raped in prison by other inmates and had been repeatedly threatened by inmates and guards. Nevertheless, he said he visited his son four days ago and the man appeared fine and gave no hint of any despair that could drive him to take his own life.

Ram Singh also had a badly injured hand and would have been unable to hang himself, his father said, speaking from outside his small home in a New Delhi slum.

"Somebody has killed him," he said, insisting he would push for a top-level investigation into the death.

Mangelal Singh said he feared for the safety of another son who is also on trial in the rape case.

The defendants were being housed in separate buildings on the jail grounds and were all under suicide watch, a jail official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

The rape victim and a male friend were attacked after boarding the bus Dec. 16 as they tried to return home after watching a movie, police say. The six men, the only occupants of the private bus, beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to inflict massive internal injuries to her, police say. The victims were dumped naked on the roadside, and the woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.

The brutal attack set off nationwide protests about India's treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.

Singh's death comes as the trial was deep underway, with another hearing scheduled for Monday. The four surviving defendants were produced in court, but left after a short time because of an attorney's strike.

Vivek Sharma, a lawyer representing another defendant, said he planned to ask the court to provide greater protection for his client.

"In a high-security jail, an occurrence of this kind is highly condemnable. It raises the serious issue of security of the accused persons in the jail," he said.

"My clients don't feel safe in Tihar jail," said another defense lawyer, A.P. Singh.

K.T.S. Tulsi, a former top lawyer in the office of the solicitor general of India, said the suicide should have no impact on the trial, which is being held in a closed courtroom under a gag order that prevents news organizations from publishing details of the proceedings.

He said the death highlighted how important it is for society not to demonize people who have been accused but not convicted of crimes.

"It is so unfortunate that the media goes on to presume that they are guilty and goes on to condemn them and demonize them to an extent that it makes the life of these people not worth living," he said.

In 2011, 68 inmates in India killed themselves and another eight were killed by fellow inmates, according to India's National Crime Records Bureau.

Tihar Jail is badly overcrowded with nearly twice as many prisoners as it was designed to hold. Jail authorities have been working to soften its reputation in part by selling TJ's cookies baked by the inmates to the public.

Study sheds light on role of climate in influenza transmission

Saturday, March 9, 2013

Two types of environmental conditions?cold-dry and humid-rainy?are associated with seasonal influenza epidemics, according to an epidemiological study led by researchers at the National Institutes of Health's Fogarty International Center. The paper, published in PLOS Pathogens, presents a simple climate-based model that maps influenza activity globally and accounts for the diverse range of seasonal patterns observed across temperate, subtropical and tropical regions.

The findings could be used to improve existing current influenza transmission models, and could help target surveillance efforts and optimize the timing of seasonal vaccine delivery, according to Fogarty researcher Cecile Viboud, Ph.D., who headed the study. "The model could have a broader application, encouraging researchers to analyze the association between climatic patterns and infectious disease across a wide range of diseases and latitudes," said Viboud.

Human influenza infections exhibit a strong seasonal cycle in temperate regions, and laboratory experiments suggest that low specific humidity facilitates the airborne survival and transmission of the virus in temperate regions. Specific humidity is the ratio of water vapor to dry air in a particular body of air while relative humidity?commonly used in weather forecasts?is the amount of water vapor in the air relative to its capacity to hold water vapor, and is primarily a function of temperature.

Data from animal studies indicate low temperature and humidity increase the duration of the virus's reproduction and expulsion in infected organisms and virus stability in the environment, increasing the probability of transmission through coughing, sneezing or breathing. In contrast, high temperature seems to block airborne transmission.

According to James Tamerius, Ph.D., a geographer at Columbia University, New York City, and the first author of the study, the effect of low specific humidity on influenza could cause annual winter epidemics in temperate areas. "However, this relationship is unlikely to account for the epidemiology of influenza in tropical and subtropical regions where epidemics often occur during the rainy season or transmit year-round without a well-defined season," he said.

After assessing the role of local climatic variables on virus seasonality in a global sample of study sites, Viboud and her colleagues found that temperature and specific humidity were the best individual predictors of the months of maximum influenza activity, known as influenza peaks. The team discovered that in temperate regions, influenza was more common one month after periods of minimum specific humidity. These periods happen to coincide with months of lowest temperature. In contrast, sites that maintained high levels of specific humidity and temperature were generally characterized by influenza epidemics during the most humid and rainy months of the year. "The models we used predicted the timing of peak influenza activity with 75 to 87 percent accuracy," said Viboud.

"Anecdotal evidence suggests that colder climates have winter flu while warmer climates that experience major fluctuations in precipitation have flu epidemics during the rainy season, and the current study fits that pattern," said Viboud. "In contrast, the seasonality of influenza is less well-defined in locations with little variation in temperature and precipitation, and is a pattern that remains poorly understood. One hypothesis that is often used to explain tropical influenza activity is that people congregate indoors more frequently during the rainy season, increasing contact rates and disease transmission. There is little data to confirm this, however, and it's an interesting area for future research."

To reach these conclusions, the researchers used a recently developed global database that provides information on influenza peaks from 1975-2008 for 78 sites worldwide. The study spanned a range of latitude that was between 1 and 60 degrees, with 39 percent of the sites located in the tropics. Additionally, epidemiological data from nine countries participating in FluNet, the World Health Organization's global influenza surveillance program, was used to ensure independent validation. The nine countries?including Spain, Tunisia, Senegal, Philippines, Vietnam, Colombia, Paraguay, South Africa and Argentina? were not represented in the original 78-location database and were chosen because each country provided several years of data.

"We've shown the importance of thresholds in humidity and temperature which are predictive of whether influenza activity occurs during winter months, the rainy season or throughout the year," said Viboud. "The predictions of our climate-based models compared favorably to epidemiological information collected independently of the dataset used for the model-building exercise."

Though the study offers researchers a new tool in the global effort to track the spread of influenza, climate is only one of several potential drivers of influenza seasonality. "Further work should focus on examining the role of population travel and other factors in influenza transmission," notes Mark Miller, M.D., director of Fogarty's Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies. "

More broadly, additional analysis of the link between climate and infectious diseases is needed? particularly for respiratory and intestinal pathogens that display marked seasonality." The authors conclude, "A better understanding of the environmental, demographic and social drivers of infectious disease seasonality is crucial for improving transmission models and optimizing interventions."

###

The study was conducted in the context of the Multinational Influenza Seasonal Mortality Study, an ongoing international collaborative effort led by Fogarty to better understand the epidemiological and evolutionary patterns of influenza. New study validates longevity pathway

Friday, March 8, 2013

A new study demonstrates what researchers consider conclusive evidence that the red wine compound resveratrol directly activates a protein that promotes health and longevity in animal models. What's more, the researchers have uncovered the molecular mechanism for this interaction, and show that a class of more potent drugs currently in clinical trials act in a similar fashion. Pharmaceutical compounds similar to resveratrol may potentially treat and prevent diseases related to aging in people, the authors contend.

These findings are published in the March 8 issue of Science.

For the last decade, the science of aging has increasingly focused on sirtuins, a group of genes that are believed to protect many organisms, including mammals, against diseases of aging. Mounting evidence has demonstrated that resveratrol, a compound found in the skin of grapes as well as in peanuts and berries, increases the activity of a specific sirtuin,SIRT1, that protects the body from diseases by revving up the mitochondria, a kind of cellular battery that slowly runs down as we age. By recharging the batteries, SIRT1 can have profound effects on health.

Mice on resveratrol have twice the endurance and are relatively immune from effects of obesity and aging. In experiments with yeast, nematodes, bees, flies and mice, lifespan has been extended.

"In the history of pharmaceuticals, there has never been a drug that binds to a protein to make it run faster in the way that resveratrol activates SIRT1," said David Sinclair, Harvard Medical School professor of genetics and senior author on the paper. "Almost all drugs either slow or block them."

In 2006, Sinclair's group published a study showing that resveratrol could extend the lifespan of mice, and the company Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, which was started by HMS researchers, was founded to make drugs more potent than resveratrol. (Sinclair is a co-founder of Sirtris, a GlaxoSmithKline company, and remains a scientific advisor. Sirtris currently has a number of sirtuin-activating compounds in clinical trials.)

But while numerous studies, from Sinclair's lab and elsewhere, underscored a direct causal link between resveratrol and SIRT1, some scientists claimed the studies were flawed.

The contention lay in the way SIRT1 was studied in vitro, using a specific chemical group attached to the targets of SIRT1 that fluoresces more brightly as SIRT1 activity increases. This chemical group, however, is synthetic and does not exist in cells or in nature, and without it the experiments did not work. As a response to this, a paper published in 2010 surmised that resveratrol's activation of SIRT1 was an experimental artifact, one that existed in the lab, but not in an actual animal. SIRT1 activity in mice was, the paper claimed, at best an indirect result of resveratrol, and perhaps even a sheer coincidence.

As a result, a debate erupted over the particular pathway that resveratrol and similar compounds affected. Does resveratrol directly activate SIRT1 or is the effect indirect? "We had six years of work telling us that this was most definitely not an artifact," said Sinclair. "Still, we needed to figure out precisely how resveratrol works. The answer was extremely elegant."

Sinclair and Basil Hubbard, then a doctoral student in the lab, teamed up with a group of researchers from both the National Institutes of Health and Sirtris Pharmaceuticals to address this question.

First, the team addressed the problem of the fluorescent chemical group. Why was it required for resveratrol to rev up SIRT1 in the test tube? Instead of dismissing the result as an artifact, the researchers surmised that the chemical might be mimicking molecules found naturally in the cell. These turned out to be a specific class of amino acid, the building blocks of proteins. In nature, there are three amino acids that resemble the fluorescent chemical group, one of which is tryptophan, a molecule abundant in turkey and notable for inducing drowsiness. When researchers repeated the experiment, swapping the fluorescing chemical group on the substrate with a tryptophan residue, resveratrol and similar molecules were once again able to activate SIRT1.

"We discovered a signature for activation that is in fact found in the cell and doesn't require these other synthetic groups," said Hubbard, first author of the study. "This was a critical result, which allowed us to bridge the gap between our biochemical and physiological findings.

"Next, we needed to identify precisely how resveratrol presses on SIRT1's accelerator," said Sinclair. The team tested approximately 2,000 mutants of the SIRT1 gene, eventually identifying one mutant that completely blocked resveratrol's effect. The particular mutation resulted in the substitution of a single amino acid residue, out of the 747 that make up SIRT1. The researchers also tested hundreds of other molecules from the Sirtris library, many of which are far more powerful than resveratrol, against this mutant SIRT1. All failed to activate it.

The authors propose a model for how resveratrol works: When the molecule binds, a hinge flips, and SIRT1 becomes hyperactive.

Although these experiments occurred in a test tube, once the researchers identified the precise location of the accelerator pedal on SIRT1?and how to break it?they could test their ideas in a cell. They replaced the normal SIRT1 gene in muscle and skin cells with the accelerator-dead mutant. Now they could test precisely whether resveratrol and the drugs in development work by tweaking SIRT1 (in which case they would not work) or one of the thousands of other proteins in a cell (in which they would work). While resveratrol and the drugs tested revved up mitochondria in normal cells (an effect caused activating by SIRT1), the mutant cells were completely immune.

"This was the killer experiment," said Sinclair. "There is no rational alternative explanation other than resveratrol directly activates SIRT1 in cells. Now that we know the exact location on SIRT1 where and how resveratrol works, we can engineer even better molecules that more precisely and effectively trigger the effects of resveratrol."

School textbook: 'Hippies' were followers of Satan-worshipping rock stars

Hippies (AmericaBlog)

A school participating in Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's controversial voucher program is apparently using a history book that teaches its eighth-grade students that "hippies" were dirty followers of Satan-worshipping rock musicians.

The textbook, ?America: Land I Love," includes a section on the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

Here's a paragraph taken from that section, which was published Wednesday by AmericaBlog.com:

(AmericaBlog)

Many young people turned to drugs and immoral lifestyles; these youth became known as hippies. They went without bathing, wore dirty, ragged, unconventional clothing, and deliberately broke all codes of politeness or manners. Rock music played an important part in the hippie movement and had great influence over the hippies. Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults or practiced Satan worship.

It's not clear which school is using the aforementioned textbook. John Aravosis, who published the text on AmericaBlog, said the source was "a friend" who sent him a photo of the section.

But this isn't the first time books used in Jindal's voucher program?which allows poor and middle-class students the opportunity to attend private schools that often have religion-based curricula?have been called into question. Last fall, Mother Jones magazine published a list of "14 wacky 'facts' kids will learn in Louisiana's voucher schools." Among them:

"A few slave holders were undeniably cruel. Examples of slaves beaten to death were not common, neither were they unknown. The majority of slave holders treated their slaves well."?United States History for Christian Schools, 2nd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 1991

And:

"[The Ku Klux] Klan in some areas of the country tried to be a means of reform, fighting the decline in morality and using the symbol of the cross. Klan targets were bootleggers, wife-beaters, and immoral movies. In some communities it achieved a certain respectability as it worked with politicians."?United States History for Christian Schools, 3rd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 2001

Last month, Jindal defended the program in Washington.

"To oppose school choice is to put the wishes of the adults who control the status quo ahead of the needs of our children," Jindal said. "To oppose school choice is to oppose equal opportunity."

This undated photo, provided by the New York City Police Department on Monday March 4, 2013, shows Julio Acevedo, 44, who police are looking for in connection with the death of an expectant couple that was killed in a car accident in Brooklyn early Sunday morning and their premature baby, who was delivered alive but did not survive. NEW YORK (AP) ? A man suspected of fleeing the scene of a grisly crash in New York City that killed a pregnant woman and her husband was arrested at a convenience store in northeastern Pennsylvania on Wednesday after a friend arranged his surrender with New York authorities.

Julio Acevedo, 44, walked to officers waiting in cars in the parking lot in Bethlehem, Pa., and was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, said Paul Browne, chief spokesman for the New York Police Department. Acevedo, wearing a hooded sweatshirt, said nothing to officers who took him into custody, Browne said.

The surrender, which occurred shortly after 5 p.m., was brokered by a friend who had been in touch with police earlier in the day. The friend met officers at New York's Grand Central Station, then led them to Acevedo in Bethlehem, about 80 miles away, police said.

Acevedo was being held by Pennsylvania State Police and was awaiting extradition to New York. Browne said it wasn't clear when he would be returned.

It also wasn't clear if Acevedo had an attorney. The friend had told police that Acevedo would surrender after consulting a lawyer, but none was with him when he turned himself in, Browne said.

Acevedo allegedly was speeding down a Brooklyn street at 60 mph early Sunday when he crashed into a car carrying Nachman and Raizy Glauber, both 21. They died Sunday, and their premature son died Monday.

Acevedo told the Daily News that he was fleeing a gunman who was trying to shoot at him when his borrowed BMW slammed into a hired car carrying the couple. He told the newspaper he fled because he was worried he'd be killed. But police said there were no reports of shots fired in the area at the time of the wreck.

The tragedy unfolded shortly after midnight Sunday, when Raizy Glauber, who was seven months pregnant, decided to go to the hospital because she wasn't feeling well, her family said. They called a livery cab, a hired car that is arranged via telephone, not hailed off the street like a yellow cab.

The crash with the BMW reduced the cab to a crumpled heap, and Raizy Glauber was thrown from the wreck. The engine ended up in the back seat. The driver of the livery cab was knocked unconscious but was not seriously hurt.

The couple belonged to a close-knit ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn, which is home to the largest community of ultra-Orthodox Jews outside Israel, more than 250,000. They were members of the Satmar Hasidic sect. Raizy Glauber grew up in a prominent rabbinical family. Her husband was studying at a rabbinical college; his family founded a line of clothing for Orthodox Jews.

The child was delivered by cesarean section after his parents were killed. The baby weighed only about 4 pounds when he was delivered, neighbors and friends said. He died of extreme prematurity, the city medical examiner's office said.

The baby was buried Monday near his parents' graves, according to a spokesman for the Hasidic Jewish community. About a thousand community members turned out for the young couple's funeral a day earlier.

Word of Acevedo's arrest was met with bittersweet satisfaction in the Glaubers' community.

"It's a sweet bitter pill to swallow," said Isaac Abraham, a spokesman for the community. "It's a little good news that at least the man responsible has been arrested, but it doesn't bring any of the victims back."

He added that community members hoped Acevedo would face murder charges. "We in the community hope that today is Acevedo's last day that he sees daylight for the rest of his life," he said.

Acevedo was arrested last month on a charge of driving while under the influence, and the case is pending. He was stopped by police after they said he was driving erratically around 3 a.m. Feb. 17. He had a blood-alcohol level of .13, over the limit of .08, police said.

He served about a decade in prison in the 1990s for manslaughter after he was convicted of shooting Kelvin Martin, a Brooklyn criminal whose moniker "50 Cent" was the inspiration for rapper Curtis Jackson's current stage name.

How Acevedo came to possess the BMW is under investigation. The registered owner was arrested Sunday on insurance fraud charges related to the vehicle, but the case was deferred.

Nashville mayor viewing tornado siren installation
March 07, 2013 04:05 EST

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Nashville Mayor Karl Dean will be viewing the installation of a new tornado siren in south Nashville, which is one of 20 new sirens being installed.

Nashville is expanding and upgrading its tornado warning siren system to increase the number of sirens to 93 across the city. The city is also changing the sound of the sirens from an electronic tone to a tone that sounds more like an old air raid warning. Officials say the mechanically generated tone will be easier to hear and will travel farther.

On Thursday, Dean will visit the installation of the city's newest siren at the elementary school at Lakeview. It will provide warnings to the surrounding area that includes Nashboro Village and areas east of the Murfreesboro Road and Bell Road intersections.

Valerie Harper's Rare Brain Cancer: What Caused It? ? AARP

Personal Health Print

Actress Valerie Harper, who?s been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, has a rare type that often spreads from another form of cancer, such as breast, melanoma or, in Harper?s case, lung cancer ? which she battled in 2009.Valerie Harper

Called leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, it affects about 5 percent of cancer patients and the first signs are ?similar to stroke symptoms,? including trouble speaking, numbness of the face, double vision, or difficulty swallowing, says Keith L. Black, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Black, who is not involved in Harper?s care, says it?s important that patients who have had cancers that could potentially spread to the brain ?quickly alert their physicians if they develop any neurological symptoms.?

Harper had told People magazine that she had experienced numbness in her jaw before tests revealed the cancer.

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis is not a brain tumor, but an invasion of tiny cancerous particles in the fluid surrounding the brain and the spine, Isabelle Germano, M.D., director of the brain tumor program at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York, told FoxNews.com. These deadly specks damage the thin membrane that protects the brain and spinal cord, called the meninges.

The cancer is ?literally sprinkled all over? the brain, Anders Cohen, M.D., chief of neurosurgery and spine surgery at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York, explained to CBSNews.com.? He said doctors sometimes refer to this on an MRI scan as ?sugar-coating? the brain.

Treatment for Harper?s condition can only slow the inevitable spread of the disease, Jeremy Rudnick, M.D., Harper?s neuro-oncologist at Cedars-Sinai, told People. He likened it to slowing down a 100 mph train to 5 to 10 mph. Without any treatment, a patient has weeks to live. Harper has been told she has about three months.

Harper, famous as the spunky best friend Rhoda Morgenstern on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, told People she was stunned after receiving her diagnosis, but realized she could help? spread awareness for the rare condition. ?This could draw more attention to cancer research. I think there?s an opportunity to help people,? Harper told the magazine.

ChargeCard pocket iPhone charger starts shipping, we go hands- and wallets-on

Image

Perhaps we all bemoaned the death of the 30-pin dock connector accessories a little prematurely. Apple may be moving away from the technology in a huge way, but it seems the category's got a little juice left in her after all. On the back of a successful Kickstarter campaign last summer (raising a bit more than three times its proposed $50,000), the duo behind ChargeCard took their iPhone charger on the road to Las Vegas in January. Roughly half a year after hitting its goal, the product has finally started shipping, with one of the units making its way to our desk just this week.

The ChargeCard's clever it its simplicity, a credit card-sized device made from ABS (think: Lego) plastic. A little rubberized arm lives in the center of the thing, unfolding and plugging into a USB port. One edge of the card, meanwhile, fits into your iPhone's port (assuming, of course, that you're not one of those fancy pants iPhone 5 owners, you big shot, you). And, well, that's pretty much all there is to the thing.

106-year-old Mass. man gets high school diploma

(AP) ? Fred Butler was married for 65 years, raised five children, served in the Army during World War II and worked for years for the local water department, but the fact he never earned a high school diploma always bothered him.

Not anymore.

The 106-year-old was awarded his honorary diploma Monday during an emotional ceremony attended by school officials, state lawmakers and Beverly Mayor Bill Scanlon.

"I thank everybody who is responsible for this," he said, wearing a mortar board hat and tassel and holding the prized document in his hands. "I certainly appreciate it."

Butler dropped out of school before the ninth-grade to accept a full-time job at a print shop to support his mother and five younger siblings.

Daughter-in-law Cathy Butler says he regretted dropping out and always emphasized the importance of education to his children and grandchildren.

A grandson, Mike Calabro, said Butler gave him $5 for every A on his report card.

Cathy Butler launched the effort to get her father-in-law his diploma as a way to raise his spirits following the death of his wife, Ruth, last year.

Fred Butler's only concern was that he hadn't earned it.

Scanlon put that concern to rest. "It's a long time to wait for your diploma," Scanlon said, "but you've obviously earned it very well."

More Than Meets the Eye About Death, Dying, and Afterlife: The ...

The loss of someone that you love, or care for deeply is a very painful experience. Many people are able to relate to the death of a person, but few are able to understand the pain associated with losing a pet. After the death of a pet, it is normal to experience feelings of sadness and depression. For some, this feeling remains with them for years after the death of a pet. Everyone grieves differently, and it is a highly personal experience. While there is no wrong or right way to grieve, there are ways to help ease the pain. One way to help with the pain is to commemorate your pet. By honoring your pet's life you can help ensure that its memory lives on.

Similar to the death of a human, a pet's life should be cherished and remembered. Holding a memorial ceremony, or funeral is a good way to help loved ones and family members come to terms with the loss of a pet. Young children can also help by making photo collages of their favorite memories with their pet. If you choose to bury your pet at home, encourage visitors to place a treat, toy or other special objects to be buried with your pet.

You might want to consider including a pet memorial or headstone for your pet regardless if you plan to bury them at home or in a pet cemetery. Pet monuments and granite pet markers are custom made. Black granite is a respectful and sophisticated material of choice for monuments and headstones. Black granite is dark in color, and are polished to a mirror-like finish. The engraving on black granite appears white, which stands out against the dark background. Pet monuments as well as head markers can easily be engraved to include your pet's name, an uplifting message to remember your pet, and also their picture.

If burial is not an option or against city bylaws, cremation offers pet owners another option. Decorative urns can be used to store your pet's ashes. Urns can be made out of almost any material. A popular choice for pet owners is the wood pet urn. Wooden pet urns can be ordered to your specifications to store ashes for all different size pets. Urns come in different wood finishes and grains, and many can have your pet's picture laser-etched onto its side. There are also urns that have a memory box on one side and the urn on the other side. It can be filled with your pet's photo, favorite toy or other memorable item. This is a tasteful way to preserve the memory of your pet. Another type of urn is a cremation marker that is made of granite. The base is hollowed out to the hold ashes of your beloved pet.

If you find it too painful to keep your pet's ashes at home, another alternative would be to scatter its ashes in a garden and then plant flowers in the soil. This way, your pet will symbolically help provide the foundation for new life. You can place a head marker or monument to serve as a memorial keepsake in the garden to remember your pet.

The Inside Track on Speed Skating | Lake Placid, NY - Adirondacks

I didn't really know much or think about speed skating until Eric Heiden brought the sport into the spotlight during the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. And although I have worked in Lake Placid on and off since the mid 90's, I have never considered trying out those cumbersome-looking long blades on the oval in the middle of town, which has a life-sized figure of Heiden clad in his 1980 tight yellow outfit out front, with the face cutout for souvenir pictures.

Speed skater view

That is, I didn't consider it until a few winters ago, when my husband started nordic skating. Nordic skates are longer blades that attach to nordic ski boots, usually, with bindings like those on a cross country or backcountry ski. I now have some old hockey skates to go along with him on occasion, but haven't gone on some of the long treks he and his friends have enjoyed on the big Adirondack lakes and ponds and rivers.

Those treks are possible when the ice forms due to consistent freezing temperatures followed by NO snow. Once the snow falls on top of the ice, it's essentially over for the nordic skaters on that particular sheet. Though the outdoor adventure of following a river through the wilderness for 20 miles on skates doesn't compare, we've talked about trying out the speed skating oval as a backup long blade option when the "wild" ice is too snowy.

Lake Placid nordic skating

And so on a recent weekday, my husband joined me in Lake Placid to try out the speed skating oval. And while he took off to do some laps on his nordic skate blades, I consulted an expert.

My buddy Christie Sausa is something of a skating aficionado. She and her family moved to Lake Placid when she was young (though I'd still put her in the category of young) so that she could pursue her skating dreams. She began figure skating as a very young kid, and added speed skating to round out her training routine. She writes about skating for local news outlets, organizes skating-related events, and she and her mother run the Lake Placid Skate Shop right across the road from the oval. And she's even published a book: "Lake Placid Figure Skating, A History".

I told her that I was going to try speed skating on this particular day, and she offered to lend me some skates, accompany me and give me some pointers. Turns out that was a very good idea.

It's not as if I've never worn skates. I grew up in a house located right on Lake Champlain, so a lot of our activities and adventures as kids were centered around the water, and in the winter - as it ALWAYS froze across at our house in the olden days - the ice.

Every winter, my sister and I couldn't wait until the lake ice was thick enough for us to skate on. Sometimes we were lucky and there wasn't much snow to clear, allowing us to explore along the shore without shoveling. Regardless, we'd always have our own private rink in front of the house, and would daily don our figure skates and pretend we were Dorothy Hamill (without the camel).

But figure skates have that little toe pick to help push you along, and the blades are shaped to a curve along the bottom edge, which is called the rocker. And, as Christie pointed out to me, the blades on figure and hockey skates are grooved, with a hollow running down the middle, which creates a user-friendly inside and outside edge.

Speed skating blades, on the other foot, are ground flat, like thin rectangles.

Speed skates

I put on a pair of the comfortable recreational speed skates that Christie's shop rents, (the boots are padded, and the blades are "fixed", rather than hinged, or "clap" blades like normal speed and nordic skates which allow the blade to stay on the ice longer) and headed out to the oval. I stepped gingerly onto the perfectly zambonied ice, and immediately froze: the thin, flat rectangular blades felt like I was trying to stand on two slippery I-beams to me. I was sure that I was going to fall if I moved my feet in any direction.

Christie explained that the blades were indeed sharp - but to engage them I'd have to move forward, use the edges, and put my weight entirely on each foot as I pushed out and away, then placed my foot back close again as I pushed outward with the other to proceed around the oval.

We took a couple of veerrrrry slow loops around the inside half of the oval - and I was slightly jealous of the recreational skaters on figure and hockey skates on the outer lane of the oval for this split session, who seemed to be easily gliding and laughing. There were a great number of them, as compared to those of us on the inside track. We stayed, per speed skating etiquette, on the very right side of the inside lane so that the few "real" training speed skaters could easily go by us on the left.

As we skated and talked, however, and I forgot to think about the I-beams on my feet, I was comfortably gliding with long, sweeping steps; right, left, and we were suddenly going quite a bit faster. This was FUN.

Christie speed skating

My husband had looped around the entire time on his nordic blades - comfortable with experience on the thin rectangles. The open session was two hours, and so I "released" Christie so that she could do a real speed skating workout. Just like the Heidens from 1980, she sprinted around the oval, using that cool crossover technique on the tighter corners - I could hear the "clap" sound of her blades as she switched feet.

I glided around the oval a couple more times, enjoying the view of the High Peaks in the distance, watching the crowds of other figure- and hockey skate-clad folks on the outer lane and fascinated by the clean, sleek motion of the training speed skaters that passed me on the left.

We left tired and happy, saying goodbye to the smiling box office folks, and stopping briefly to look at the cutout of Heiden.

Maybe there would be more recreational speed skaters on the inside lane if they knew that the tight yellow suit isn't required.

Try it! Get all of the information about ice skating, and be sure to check out the Lake Placid skating oval?conditions and schedules.

- Kim Rielly is the director of communications for the Lake Placid CVB.

Swiss vote on bosses' pay could hit offshore firms

(AP) ? Foreign executives who moved their company headquarters to Switzerland to get better tax deals for their firms may find themselves paying the price for it this weekend.

A plan to crack down on excessive corporate pay packages is predicted to pass at the ballot box Sunday.

If the "Rip-off Initiative" succeeds, shareholders will be given the right to hold a binding vote on a company's compensation of executives and directors. This includes both base salary and bonuses.

It would also ban "golden hellos" and "golden goodbyes" ? one-time bonuses that senior managers often receive when joining or leaving a company which can run into millions of dollars.

Finally, the proposal pushes greater corporate transparency, for example by requiring that all loans to executives be declared to shareholders.

Breaching the rules could lead to a fine of up to six annual salaries and up to three years in prison.

The measure targets all Swiss-based companies ? homegrown and offshore alike ? as long as their shares are publicly traded. International companies like oil rig owner Transocean Ltd.; fire and safety company Tyco International Ltd., and a bakery conglomerate Aryzta AG would be treated just like Swiss banks UBS AG and Credit Suisse Group, food and drinks giant Nestle SA or watchmaker Swatch Group.

In Europe, some other countries such as the Netherlands and Denmark already have similar legislation allowing shareholders at least a binding vote on executive compensation. In the U.S. and Britain, however, such "say-on-pay" votes are non-binding.

The proposal is the brainchild of independent lawmaker and businessman Thomas Minder. It has divided Swiss business groups, political parties and labor unions. But public opinion in Switzerland ? traditionally a haven for light-touch regulation and pro-business sentiment ? has been overwhelmingly in favor of the Rip-off Initiative.

A survey conducted mid-February by the respected polling group gfs.bern found 64 percent of voters in favor of the proposal, 27 percent against, 9 percent undecided, with anger at perceived corporate greed the driving force for voters backing the initiative.

As in the United States, public opinion toward executive pay is still shaped by the outrage at 'fat cat' bank bosses who received million-dollar bonuses during the 2008 financial crisis, when ordinary investors were seeing their dividends slashed and the value of their shares fall sharply.

The campaign for a "Yes" vote recently got an unexpected boost when it emerged that the outgoing board chairman of Swiss drug maker Novartis AG, Daniel Vasella, was due to receive 72 million Swiss francs ($77 million) over five years as part of a deal to prevent him from going to a rival firm.

When Vasella ? facing public outrage ? dropped the deal, attention shifted to Edward Breen, the American chairman of Tyco, for reportedly earning 30 million francs last year.

Opponents of the initiative warn that approving it would damage Switzerland's competitiveness in the global economy and endanger jobs.

So far, no companies have publicly declared they would leave Switzerland if the referendum passes, said Brigitta Moser-Harder, a shareholder activist and backer of the proposal.

But Tyco is keeping its options open. "We await the outcome of the vote in Switzerland on Sunday and we will assess the impact at that time," company spokesman Brett Ludwig said Friday.

The Swiss proposal comes on the heels of a European Union decision this week to cap bankers' bonuses at one year's base salary except in the case of overwhelming shareholder approval.

The idea that shareholders should have a strong say in their company's affairs chimes with Switzerland's tradition of direct democracy. Voters in the country who collect 100,000 signatures can force a binding referendum on any issue.

Obama to announce picks for EPA, Energy: official

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will announce on Monday his intent to nominate air quality expert Gina McCarthy to lead the Environmental Protection Agency and nuclear physicist Ernest Moniz to head the Department of Energy, a White House official said.

McCarthy would likely become the face of Obama's latest push to fight climate change. Currently the assistant administrator for the EPA Office of Air and Radiation, she would replace Lisa Jackson, who has stepped down as EPA chief.

Moniz, a former undersecretary of energy during the Clinton administration, is director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Energy Initiative, a research group that gets funding from industry heavyweights including BP, Chevron, and Saudi Aramco for academic work on projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gases.

Moniz would replace Steven Chu, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, who is stepping down.

The White House said Obama would make a personnel announcement at 10:15 a.m. EST (1515 GMT). The president also plans to announce his choice of Sylvia Mathews Burwell, head of the Walmart Foundation, to become director of the White House budget office.

Points To Ponder When Considering Commercial Real Estate

By June Barrack

Brokers and transactions and closing costs and everything that else that goes into real estate, cause some people to be totally confused when it comes to dealing with commercial properties. In this article, you will learn some great tips and tactics to use, whenever you?re dealing with commercial real estate.

Suppose you have found a new building for your business and think you have checked everything out. You may want to do one more thing before you buy. Go to the city planning office and find out if changes in traffic patterns are planned that will affect this location. Otherwise, you may find your would-be customers rerouted elsewhere.

Don?t get too set on one type of commercial real estate as an investment. You may be thinking that buying an apartment building would be the best investment because people always need a place to live, but look at storefronts, office buildings and warehouses, too. You might get just as much income with a lot less hassle!

The cap rate in commercial real estate refers to calculate the overall value of income producing properties. Great examples for determining cap rates would be a strip mall, several in a row office buildings, and apartment complexes that have more than at least 5 units. Cap rates will help determine that amount of cash flow you can expect from your acquired commercial real estates.

Keep your home office uncluttered and your commercial real estate paperwork stored away in an organized manner. That paperwork can be hugely important to a deal, so having it in a place that is easily accessed and in a format that is simple to search through will be key to your peace of mind.

When you are ready to make the leap from residential to commercial real estate investing, think outside the box. Many people limit their scope to apartments and modular home parks because of their familiarity with the world of residential real estate. Keep in mind that there are a host of options in commercial real estate beyond residential housing, including commercial office buildings, retail establishments, warehouses, vacant land and industrial parks. Learn more about these options to see if they hold the key to your investment success.

Avoid permitted use clause at all costs. If your landlord insists on it, make it a broad one to ensure room to grow your business. At the time of leasing, you might use the office for a very defined and narrow purpose. Your goal is though to grow and improve your business which might be impossible if your permitted use clause is too narrow and significantly limits your use.

Weigh all of your property options before choosing what to invest in. Apartments are an easy choice, but there are a lot of people who are already in the apartment market. Look into other types of commercial properties such as office buildings, commercial land, etc. It may be best to step out of your comfort zone and find a unique goal.

Before you invest in something, you should be an expert on this type of real estate. For instance, if you want to invest in apartments, you should know about legislation, safety requirements and have a good idea of what being a landlord means. If you are thinking about investing in an office building, you should understand what a company needs.
