The Feminist Pagan: PBP- M is for Magical Timing

Magical timing is something that I have noticed has a marked impact on the outcome of my spells, so for this post I thought I would just share the information I use to determine the best time to cast my magic. It is not always possible, or practical, to work all of the information in to my spell work but even using the appropriate day of the week and time of day can make a huge difference, at least for me.?

Lenovo ThinkPad T431s

Consistency wins the race. To that end, the Lenovo ThinkPad T431s follows on as Lenovo's mainstream business corporate laptop. It takes some cues from next-gen systems like the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, like carbon fiber construction and a sealed battery, but it's still a powerhouse to be considered when you're buying 10 or 10,000 laptops per order. A couple of features need improvement, but overall the T431s is a solid business laptop, and users should have no problem adapting to it from previous T-series ThinkPads.

Design and Features
The T431s measures about 0.8 by 13 by 9 inches (HWD) and weighs in at a svelte 3.37 pounds. It represents a total redesign of the ThinkPad line, though it still undoubtedly looks like a ThinkPad. The older Lenovo ThinkPad T430 had three separate mouse buttons below the space bar for use with the TrackPoint pointing stick, and two more for use with the trackpad. The new T431s has a one-piece trackpad with five mouse buttons integrated into its top and bottom edges. The bottom area is useful for the trackpad user, while the three sections of the top edge work just like the three separate buttons for the TrackPoint. That way, users who just can't change the way they do things can still left, right, and center/scroll click as they're use to doing. It has a different feel compared to the three separate buttons, particularly since the top edge of the trackpad is flat and not raised like the previous buttons, but it's easy to get used to.

The trackpad is multi-touch, and supports the usual Windows 8 gestures and swipes. The one thing you won't get on the ThinkPad T431s is a touch screen. For that, you'll have to upgrade to the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch ($1,684). Like the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch, the T431s uses carbon fiber composites in its top lid and magnesium construction in the bottom chassis to save weight and add strength.

Another feature that saves weight is the elimination of the optical drive option. DVD and CD technology is mostly dead at this point anyway, but if you still need optical drives, your IT manager can buy a few USB external drives, which still work fine on the T431s. The T431s also eliminates a legacy technology that will be missed: The T431s drops the removable battery in favor of a sealed battery. This will be a bother for the road warrior who has the discipline to keep several spare batteries handy at all times, but if your users mainly keep their laptops docked, then it won't bother them. The T431s still has a standardized Lenovo docking port on the bottom for use with ThinkPad Series 3 docks.

The T431s has some ruggedized features, including draining channels in the keyboard deck to help with liquid spills. The system is tested to Mil-STD-810 levels for temperature, pressure, humidity, vibration, and dust resistance. In addition to the ruggedized features, the T431s we tested came with a backlit keyboard with scalloped key tops, which makes it easier and more comfortable to type. As usual, Lenovo's mainstream business laptop has one of the best keyboards in the category. The system we tested also has a fingerprint reader and the requisite security hardware behind it, as well as a smartcard reader.

The T431s matte-finish screen measures 14 inches diagonally and has a 1,600-by-900 resolution. Lenovo and other manufacturers call it a HD+ screen, but it still falls short of the 1,920-by-1,080 resolution required for full 1080p HD. You can view 720p content natively, but 1080p graphics will be scaled down or cropped. This deficit won't bother most text-based users, but spreadsheet jockeys will miss the extra screen real estate. For those folks, consider using a docking station or the built in VGA and mini-DisplayPort to connect a large screen external display. Speaking of ports, the T431s comes with a full-size Ethernet port, two USB 3.0 ports (colored black), a headset port, Kensington lock port, and a SIM card slot for an optional WWAN adapter. The system we reviewed has 4GB of system memory and a 500GB SATA hard drive for storage.

That storage can be equipped any way your IT folk decide, but this review unit came with a selection of Lenovo and third part software packages pre-loaded. These packages include Accuweather, Kindle, Evernote, Skype, Zinio, Norton Internet Security, rara.com, Sugarsync, an ad for Microsoft Office, Intel's AppUp, and Lenovo utilities like Quicklaunch and Lenovo Companion.

Performance
Lenovo ThinkPad T431s The T431s has decent, if pedestrian performance on out benchmark tests. The T431s is slowed a bit on the day-to-day PCMark7 test by its spinning hard drive, outpaced by systems like the SSD-powered Dell Latitude 6430u (our current Editors' Choice for business laptops). That said, the system is quicker on the multimedia tests than competitors like the HP Elitebook Folio 9470m. Basically, the system will perform well enough, but if your users complain about load and wait times, you should consider buying a competitor with SSD storage like the Dell or upgrade to the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch.

The T431s matched the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch on the battery life test, with a time of 5 hours 41 minutes on our batter rundown test. This was about 15 minutes longer than the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch, so the difference is essentially a wash. The Dell 6430u lasted hours longer, with a 7:40 battery time. While that's significant, five-and-a-half hours is sufficient for a business laptop simply moving from meeting to meeting.

Ultimately, the choice of laptops falls to your IT buyer and the current installed base of systems. If you're a Lenovo shop, the Lenovo ThinkPad T431s is a worthy successor to the ThinkPad faithful, though the new trackpad may take a little while to get used to. The Dell Latitude 6430u as reviewed has significantly more performance under its hood, so it holds on to the Editors' Choice for business laptops, but if your company relies on Lenovo systems, the T431s is a very good workhorse PC for your rank and file workers.

'Bunga bunga' busted: Berlusconi convicted of hiring underage girl for sex

Silvio Berlusconi,?Italy's infamous former premier, was sentenced to seven years in prison and banned from politics for life for paying an underage Moroccan prostitute for sex during so-called 'bunga bunga' parties.

It was the most damaging setback yet for the 76-year-old Berlusconi, who has been tried numerous times for his business dealings but never before for his personal conduct.

Still, he vowed that his days as a political force are not over. He has two levels of appeal ? and his supporters quickly rallied around him.

The charges against the billionaire media mogul resulted from what became widely known in?Italy?as "bunga bunga" parties hosted in 2010 by Berlusconi, then the sitting premier, at his villa near Milan, where he wined and dined beautiful young women.

Berlusconi's defense described the dinner parties as elegant soirees; prosecutors said they were sex-fueled gatherings that women were paid to attend. The woman at the center of the scandal, Karima el-Mahroug, better known as Ruby, has described aspiring showgirls stripping provocatively for the then-Italian leader.

Both Berlusconi and el-Mahroug denied ever having sex, and el-Mahroug says she never worked as a prostitute.

After the verdict, Berlusconi said in a message posted on Facebook that he believed he would be acquitted "because in the facts there is really no possibility to convict me."

He called the sentence "incredible, of a violence never seen or heard before, to try to eliminate me from the political life of this country." He pledged to "resist this persecution, because I am absolutely innocent, and I don't want in any way to abandon my battle to make?Italy?a truly free and just country."

The Milan criminal court's ruling was unexpectedly stiff, going further than the original charges and openly questioning whether many of the young women who testified in Berlusconi's defense had lied on the stand to protect him.

The panel of three judges, all women, said Berlusconi went beyond using his influence to cover up his relationship with the then-17-year-old Moroccan, as originally charged. They said he stepped in to win her release from police custody when she was accused of theft.

As a result, they added one year to the six requested by prosecutors.

The court also said it was turning over to prosecutors files containing the testimony of more than 30 young women who attended the now-infamous "bunga bunga" parties to investigate if they had lied under oath when they denied a sexual character to the gatherings.

Justice Minister Angelino Alfano, who is also secretary of Berlusconi's People of Liberty Party, said he told his political mentor to "hang in there, and keep moving on" in a phone call after the verdict.

Berlusconi was not in court for the sentencing, but his lawyer, Niccolo Ghedini, said he would appeal a decision he called both "largely expected" and "out of reality." The Berlusconi camp has long accused Milan magistrates of mounting a campaign to sideline him politically.

Berlusconi loyalist Daniela Santanche, who attended the sentencing, denounced it as "an outrage, and a political sentence that has nothing to do with justice." But she also said that it should have no impact on the government.

Some political opponents, however, said Berlusconi, who has shaped political discourse in?Italy?for two decades, should withdraw from politics immediately.

Alessandro Di Battista, a lawmaker in the anti-establishment 5 Star Movement, said Berlusconi "must go to jail. It is outrageous that he is a senator that can make laws. Until he goes to jail, the country is not free." And the left-leaning governor of Apulia, Nicchi Vendola, said Berlusconi should "abandon public life."

Berlusconi does not have any official role in government, but he is a senator in Parliament and retains influence in the uneasy grand coalition between his forces and the center-left Democratic Party that emerged after inconclusive February elections. The Democratic Party issued a statement acknowledging the sentence and in support of the autonomy of the courts.

Berlusconi's high-stakes judicial woes are far from over. He faces a final appeal in a tax fraud conviction for which he has been sentenced to four years in jail and a five-year ban from office.

Roberto D'Alimonte, a political analyst for il Sole 24 Ore daily and professor at Rome's LUISS University, said the tax fraud conviction poses the more immediate threat since?Italy's?highest court is likely to rule before the statute of limitations runs out.

The sex-for-hire case "weakens him politically, but not that much, because we have seen that his voter base seems to be insulated from the impact of these sentences. We saw in the last elections, everyone thought he was dead, but he came back to life," D'Alimonte said.

While the verdict drew intense international media coverage, with half a dozen satellite vans parked outside the Milan courthouse, there was only a smattering of public interest. A few anti-Berlusconi protesters gathered outside, and just a handful of citizens joined journalists crammed inside the small courtroom.

"For 20 years, he's been running?Italy. He's done what he wanted," said Aurelio De Boni, a retired suit salesman from Milan who attended the trial.

Neither Berlusconi nor el-Mahroug testified in this trial. El-Mahroug was called by the defense but failed to show, delaying the trial, and Berlusconi's team eventually dropped her from the witness list.

El-Mahroug, however, did testify in the separate trial of three Berlusconi aides charged with procuring prostitutes for the parties. She told that court that Berlusconi's disco featured aspiring showgirls dressed as sexy nuns and nurses performing striptease acts, and that one woman even dressed up as President Barack Obama.

El-Mahroug, now 20, said in the other trial that she attended about a half-dozen parties at Berlusconi's villa, and that after each, Berlusconi handed her an envelope with up to 3,000 euros ($3,900). She said she later received 30,000 euros cash from the then-premier, paid through an intermediary ? money that she told Berlusconi she wanted to use to open a beauty salon, despite having no formal training.

But she denied ever receiving millions from the billionaire, as she had claimed to acquaintances, saying they were "lies" meant to inflate her own importance.

She was 17 at the time of the alleged encounters but passed herself off as 24. She also claimed she was related to then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Berlusconi's lawyers argued that he believed el-Mahroug was indeed Mubarak's niece, and he called police after she was accused of theft in a bid to avoid a diplomatic incident.

Berlusconi, who has been tried numerous times relating to his business dealings, has been convicted in other cases at the trial level. But those convictions have always either been overturned on appeal or else the statute of limitations has run out before?Italy's?high court could have its say.

The sex-for-hire case is the first involving his personal conduct.

Later this week,?Italy's?highest court has scheduled a hearing on Berlusconi's appeal to a verdict ordering him to pay 560 million euros ($800 million) to a rival media group over corruption in the acquisition of the Mondadori publishing empire. And a preliminary hearing will begin in Naples to decide if Berlusconi should be tried for allegedly bribing a lawmaker to bolt a previous center-left government under Romano Prodi and join his party, a move that weakened Prodi's slim majority.

'Hyperconnectivity' Seen in Brains of Children With Autism - Health ...

By Amy Norton
HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, June 26 (HealthDay News) ? Children with autism may have higher-than-normal connectivity between certain areas of the brain, suggests a small study that hints brain imaging might some day be used to diagnose the developmental disorder.

The findings come from MRI brain scans of 20 children with autism spectrum disorders and 20 children without autism. Researchers found that those with an autism spectrum disorder showed ?hyperconnectivity? along five major brain networks.

The results, reported in the June 26 online issue of JAMA Psychiatry, suggest that the brain?s ?functional organization? differs between kids with and without autism.

?The way different areas within those brain networks ?talk? to each other is quite different in children with autism, compared with typically developing children,? said senior researcher Vinod Menon, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine in California.

One network, called the salience network, showed the most hyperconnectivity ? which basically means a greater-than-normal number of brain areas are activated at the same time. The salience network helps the brain decide which part of our environment deserves our attention at any given moment.

Menon?s team found that the more hyperconnectivity kids with autism had in the salience network, the more severe their ?restrictive? and repetitive behaviors.

Those types of behaviors ? such as being completely engrossed in a single interest, or needing to follow precise daily routines ? are among the hallmarks of autism.

It?s not clear that the hyperconnectivity actually causes those repetitive behaviors, but that is what the new findings ?hint,? Menon said.

Another possibility, he added, is that hyperconnectivity is involved in the exceptional skills seen in some kids with an autism diagnosis ? like being a whiz with numbers. For now, though, that?s an ?open question,? Menon said.

Autism spectrum disorders, which affect about one in 88 U.S. kids, are a group of developmental disorders that range widely in severity. Some people have mild problems socializing but have normal to above-normal intelligence; others have profound difficulties relating to others, speak very little and may have intellectual impairment as well.

An expert not involved in the current study said it could be a ?starting point? for developing an objective way to help diagnose autism spectrum disorders, which is currently done by observing children?s behavior. This often delays diagnosis.

But there are still a lot of questions, said Daniel Smith, senior director of discovery neuroscience for the advocacy group Autism Speaks.

One is whether the same brain activity patterns are seen in young children with autism spectrum disorders ? the age at which you would want to diagnose them. The kids in this study were between 7 and 12 years old.

The children on the autism spectrum were also all ?high-functioning? ? with normal IQs and language skills, but had problems with socializing and having conversations. So, studies need to include children with more severe autism, Smith and Menon said.

Right now, that?s tricky, Menon pointed out. Kids need to be able to lie still for the MRI scans, which may be impossible for children with more severe forms of autism; Menon said he hopes the continually improving technology will help in that regard.

No one knows what causes autism, but experts believe that genetic vulnerability and some mix of environmental factors are at work.

Last week, the same Stanford team found that children with an autism spectrum disorder showed weaker connections between certain other brain areas ? namely, areas that process the human voice and those involved in feelings of ?reward.?

They speculated that these children may get less pleasure from the sound of the human voice, and that might help explain some of their communication difficulties.

?I think there will turn out to be an interplay between hyperconnectivity and hypoconnectivity? in the brains of children with an autism spectrum disorder, Menon said.

The hope, he said, is that these early findings will eventually lead to reliable ?biomarkers? of autism. Doctors then may be able to use brain scans to improve diagnosis at an earlier age. But that will take more time and study.

One of the ?next critical steps? is to study young children, Menon said. ?Our findings will help guide those studies.?

New Joyent Service Offers Analytics Without Having To Move Data

joyent_avatarData is really hard to move. It becomes pretty much intractable as it increases in mass. Sure it can be pulled out, but that takes time and bandwidth and incurs a host of costs typically associated with using a cloud service. To really get the most of all that stored data, it's increasingly apparent that moving it is not really a good idea. Joyent's new Manta Storage Service puts the compute together with the data in the cloud where it can be processed in one place. The compute is available directly on the object store, meaning that the data can be queried immediately without having to manage all the underlying infrastructure.

Astronaut Wives: New Book Reveals True Story of Space Spouses

NEW YORK ? The American heroes of the space race are well-known: Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong and more. But less well-known are a second set of heroes that are only now getting their due: the wives.

A new book based on interviews with dozens of the wives of NASA's Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts finally tells the story of the home front that made the moon missions possible. Lily Koppel, author of "The Astronaut Wives Club" (Grand Central Publishing, June 2013), spoke June 17 here at the Forbes Galleries.

"I felt that they really deserved a place in history that they really hadn't been given," Koppel said of the subjects of her book. "It just somehow didn't make it into the history books, partly because so many of the marriages fell apart." [Secrets of the Astronaut Wives: Q&A With Lily Koppel]

The space race was taxing not just on the men who flew in America's spaceships in the 1960s and '70s, but also on their whole families. And astronauts' wives were under pressure from NASA, their husbands and themselves to project an outward image of family perfection while dealing with fear for their spouses' safety and the challenges of maintaining a home and children with almost no help.

"There were fears that they couldn't express to their husbands or their friends," Koppel said, which weighed heavily on some of the women. ?Husbands and wives were often separated for long periods, and there was a culture among the astronauts that encouraged dalliances on the side while training hundreds of miles from home.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the majority of these marriages didn't last much beyond the glory of the space race era.

Yet at the time, the life of an astronaut wife sometimes rivaled the exhilaration of flying to space.

"Everything was moving so fast and everyone was trying to get to the moon, and the wives were sort of in it as much as their husbands," Koppel told SPACE.com.

And there were certainly perks to make up for the sacrifices, such as receiving the celebrity treatment on worldwide tours and meeting heads of state when their husbands returned from a mission. "The real goodie for the wives was going to the White House and meeting Jackie [Kennedy]," Koppel said.

The astronaut families were also watched by the press and the public in a way none had been prepared for. "They were like America's first reality stars," Koppel said. "They all felt young and inexperienced, thrown into this role."

Ultimately, it's a fascinating story that took surprisingly long to be told. And despite the hardships, the sacrifices and the sometimes sad outcomes, there are few regrets. "I haven't heard one person say they would do it another way," Koppel said.

Qatar ruler hands over power to son

DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? Qatar's ruler said Tuesday he has transferred power to the 33-year-old crown prince in an anticipated move that puts a new generation in charge of the Gulf nation's vast energy wealth and rising political influence.

The 61-year-old emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, said in a televised address that the decision has been made to step down following weeks of speculation. Now, the British-educated crown prince, Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, will begin the process of putting together a new government that may be in direct contrast to the old guard leaders across the Western-backed Gulf Arab states.

Qatar has given no official explanation on the transition, but it is widely believed that Sheik Hamad is suffering from health problems.

Sheik Tamim is not expected to make any immediate policy shifts for Qatar, which has used its riches to propel itself into one of the world's most politically ambitious countries. It has served as a powerful player in the Middle East, including key support for rebels in Libya last year and now in Syria. Qatar also has broken ranks with other Gulf states to offer help to the Muslim Brotherhood, which rose to political dominance in Egypt.

In an important sign of continuity and shared goals, the outgoing emir and Sheik Tamim stood shoulder to shoulder and greeted members of the ruling family and others following the address. Sheik Tamim has been closely involved in all key decisions in recent years and his father is expected to remain a guiding force from the wings.

"Sheik Tamim will be driving his father's car, which is already programed on where to go," said Mustafa Alani, a political analyst at the Gulf Research Center in Geneva.

But the transition ? a rarity in a region where leadership changes are nearly always triggered by deaths or palace coups ? also sends a message the wider Middle East. It appears a sweeping response to the Arab Spring upheavals and their emphasis on giving voice to the region's youth, and reinforces Qatar's bold-stroke political policies.

Under Sheik Hamad, who took power in a bloodless coup in 1995, Qatar has been transformed into a political broker and a center for global investment with a sovereign fund estimated to be worth more than $100 billion. Its portfolio includes landmark real estate, luxury brands and a powerful presence in the sporting world. Tiny Qatar also defeated rivals including the U.S. to win the rights to host the 2022 World Cup.

Qatar has played a role as mediator in conflicts such as Sudan's Darfur region and regional disputes including Palestinian political rifts. Qatar this week hosted a Syrian opposition conference attended by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and is the venue for possible U.S.-led peace talks with Afghanistan's Taliban.

Sheik Tamim became the next in line to rule in 2003 after his older brother stepped aside.

Body of Sopranos star Gandolfini leaves Italy for U.S

ROME (Reuters) - The body of actor James Gandolfini, who died of a heart attack in Rome last week, was flown out of Italy on Sunday on a flight bound for New York, Rome airport authorities said.

Gandolfini, best known for his leading role in the Emmy-winning series "The Sopranos", was found dead in his Rome hotel late on Wednesday.

The actor's body left Rome's Fiumicino airport at around 1600 GMT (1200 ET) on a private flight, an airport official said.

Family friend Michael Kobold, speaking to reporters in Rome, thanked the Italian authorities and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry for helping to accelerate procedures.

Gandolfini was on holiday in Italy with his 13-year-old son and was due to attend the closing of the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily on Saturday. An autopsy showed had died of natural causes.

Gandolfini's performance as New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano made him a household name and helped usher in a new era of American television drama.

Since "The Sopranos" ended its six-season run in June 2007, Gandolfini had appeared in a number of big-screen roles, including the crime drama "Killing Them Softly" and "Zero Dark Thirty", a film about the hunt for Osama bin Laden.

Gandolfini had been working on an upcoming HBO series, "Criminal Justice," and had two films due out next year.

Samsung unveils the ATIV One 5 Style, a Windows 8 AIO with Galaxy design

Samsung unveils the ATIV One 5 Style, a Windows 8 AIO with Galaxy design

Portables aren't the only ATIV devices Samsung has in store today: Samsung's DJ Lee unveiled the ATIV One 5 Style this afternoon, an all-in-one PC with a slim 4.5mm metal frame and a Galaxy-style white bezel. From what we've seen so far, it's clearly a Windows 8 PC, and it's all screen (of the touch variety). Samsung European PC business director Patrick Povel calls it, "The perfect home entertainment device."

But you've already seen the ATIV One 5, you wanna know what's inside it -- we've just learned a load more about its specs. The ATIV One 5 features an AMD A6 quad-core processor (which also handles graphics duties), and has 4GB of RAM. The 21.5-inch display has a 1920 x 1080 resolution -- we're still not sure what type of screen that is, sadly, but we've asked. The ATIV One 5 Style arrives in the UK "later this year" for an unknown price.

Hack a day modder builds a custom controller for disabled gamers

Hack A Day A custom gaming controller for disabled gamers

Sure, when tinkerer Caleb Kraft found out that pressure switches marketed at the disabled were massively overpriced, he got mad like anybody else. But then he decided to get even the best way he knew how: by building his own, and posting the plans for all to follow on Hack a day for free. The project came about via a kid with muscular dystrophy named Thomas, who enjoyed Minecraft but may eventually lose the ability to hold a controller or use a mouse and keyboard. Caleb's idea was to build low-pressure switches using a 3D printer and simply map them to the Minecraft keyboard and mouse commands using a $20 Teensy board. He posted his plans online, but since he feels they could be improved on, also created a site called the Controller Project (see the More Coverage link). From there, those in need of a custom device can make a request, other modders can post their own plans and builders can use them to make controllers for donation. Since more is always merrier for such things, if you have such talents or know someone who needs them, hit the source for more info.

TrackBack - Integrated Supplements Blog

BlogDrMikeFor years, we at Integrated Supplements have been educating the masses on the true nature of the health food and nutritional supplement industries. ?We?ve repeatedly shown that many of the most heavily-marketed health foods and supplements may not be quite as healthy as they?re made out to be.? In fact, many of the nutritional products currently marketed towards athletes and fitness enthusiasts may be no healthier than the junk foods they?re supposedly meant to replace.

Unlike most supplement companies that seem to promote dozens of unnecessary (and even potentially harmful) products, our philosophy has always been to offer a select few high-quality nutritional supplements ? while emphasizing the importance of? integrating them into a healthy diet and intelligent exercise program.

That?s why it?s so exciting for us to see the Integrated Supplements philosophy in action.

Several years ago, we received a call from Dr. Mike Morea ? founder and namesake of the Morea Chiropractic Wellness Center located in Fruitport, Michigan.? Dr. Morea had read some of our articles on IntegratedSupplements.com and noticed many parallels between the Integrated Supplements philosophy and his own.? After discussing the details of exactly why we formulate our products the way we do, Dr. Morea decided to make Integrated Supplements products available to his chiropractic patients. ?

As it turned out, Dr. Morea was not only a medical professional with a keen eye for quality, but was, himself, an accomplished natural bodybuilder and fitness enthusiast.? Unlike many bodybuilders these days, Dr. Morea knew full well that he didn?t need to sacrifice his health to be a great athlete.? He knew as well that only quality foods and supplements build quality physiques.? So, both personally and professionally, Integrated Supplements were a perfect fit. ? ? ?

After adding the full array of Integrated Supplements products to his regime, Dr. Morea was able to reach new levels of muscularity and leanness, allowing him to earn natural bodybuilding professional status at the 2013 NANBF Natural Southern States Classic as well as an overall first place finish at the 2013 IFPA Pro North American bodybuilding championships earlier this year ? at 43 years of age, no less.

Dr. Morea?s success is especially exciting to us at Integrated Supplements.? It reinforces what we?ve been saying all along: with a little hard work and dedication, we really can forestall the ravages of aging and reach our full potential at any age. ??The good doctor truly is the Integrated Supplements philosophy in action.

Dr. Morea and Integrated Supplements are both dedicated to education as well, and, along those lines, we recently conducted a question and answer session to gain insight into the universal principles driving his success.? We discussed the many unrecognized benefits of chiropractic care, how the quality of what goes into our body influences our health and athletic success, and how limiting beliefs so often hold people back from reaching their full potential.

Integrated Supplements: As a chiropractor, you require expert knowledge of the muscular and neurological systems of the body.? As a bodybuilder, you?ve no doubt gained practical experience as to how the body responds to even the most subtle changes in diet and exercise.? How does your bodybuilding experience influence the type advice you give your patients, and how does your chiropractic expertise influence your success as a bodybuilder?

Dr. Morea: First as a ?Doctor? of Chiropractic, the word Doctor in Latin means to be a teacher.? We have to give good advice that we ourselves would follow and do follow.? As a bodybuilder, my experience has helped out in many ways.? First, our patients here at Morea Chiropractic know that when I give advice it is genuine and is something that I am not just promoting, but actually doing and living.? Being a lifetime natural drug-free athlete has allowed me to truly know about living a drug-free lifestyle, not just in regards to not taking steroids, but also taking other unnecessary medications. As a bodybuilder, when it comes to nutrition and supplementation, it is easy for me to give information that has not only been researched extensively, but also that I have done in regards to brands and foods that have worked for me as well.? So many times advice is given because it is standard of practice.? I feel that each person has an athlete inside of them and it is up to me to give them advice that is true and tried.? When it comes to exercise and stretching, I have to realize that if I am not willing to do it, they shouldn?t either ? so we keep our recommendations simple, to easily fit into their busy schedules and lifestyles.

?As a chiropractor, I have had a fascination with biochemistry and physiology.? It is a given that all chiropractors have extensive training in the structure of the body.? After all, that is what we work with every day.? However, nutrition has really peaked my interest, as well as the effect that lifestyle plays in my patient?s overall quality of life.?? It is this fascination with body chemistry and incorporating whole foods into my diet that I believe has allowed me to become a champion bodybuilder.? I have attended seminars around the country taught by chiropractors who have shaped my thoughts on human nutrition including Dr. Dan Murphy and Dr. James Chestnut.? Both of these researched chiropractors have hammered home the points of a whole-food diet with the elimination of the omega-6 fats and a healthy omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio.? Since eliminating almost all processed carbohydrates and increasing my fruit and vegetable content, I have eliminated a tremendous amount of inflammation in my body.?

I have also incorporated many of the Integrated Supplements products including the Whey Protein Isolate, Bio-Available Magnesium, and the Fiber Balance.? This has allowed me to add over 6 pounds of muscle in the past two years, and feel overall energized.? As a chiropractor, I have done the research and have eliminated all cheap protein concentrates loaded with artificial chemicals, and added Green Detox and another greens product to alkalize my body tissues.?

I have also researched the best training protocols for natural athletes incorporating changing rep ranges, time between sets, and different exercises.? Every week is different than the one before and this also benefits my soft tissue and joints as I am not doing the same repetitive movements week-in and week-out that can lead to a tremendous amount of scar tissue in the body.? I also, over the last few years, started to study weight loss and realized, ideally, a very slow loss of weight would lead to the least amount of muscle loss and subsequently, the least amount of strength lost ? which means a tremendous amount when you are trying to preserve that precious muscle tissue.?

As a chiropractor, I also had the best care possible for my body as well: regular adjustments to keep my body functioning optimally and every other week massages to allow greater recuperation and blood flow for recovery.? Just like I document patient notes meticulously, I did the same with my nutrition and workouts.? Every day over the last two years, I knew how much food I was getting and exactly what workouts I did, as well as the reps and weights.? This allowed me to track precisely if I needed to make any changes.? I felt that my chiropractic knowledge and experience helped me tremendously against guys many years younger, and am grateful for this experience.

Integrated Supplements: A lot of people probably still think of chiropractic care as something they only need if they?ve suffered an injury, or if they?ve developed a problem such as chronic back pain.? The typical overweight person with elevated cholesterol/triglycerides, pre-diabetes, and 20+ pounds to lose, however, may not immediately consider chiropractic care for their issues. ?What would you want this person to know about the benefits of chiropractic care in general, and about your services in particular?

Dr. Morea: You?re right.? Unfortunately, we as chiropractors have not done such a good job of educating the public about what we really do.? Yes, we are good at helping relieve a lot of acute and chronic conditions like migraine headaches, neck pain, sciatica, shoulder pain, etc., but most people don?t realize what chiropractic even works with.? It is the nerve system.? Unfortunately, our ?why? does not get explained really well.? Why would someone who has chronic health conditions see a back pain doctor for their problems?? I get this question a lot actually.? What we need to understand in regards to our health is that every health related problem that we have has a cause or reason behind it.? If we have high blood pressure, or elevated triglycerides, or LDL?s, or even back pain, there is a reason.? We have been taught that the problem is the symptom; but it?s merely the manifestation of the problem.? The true problem is the cause.? And that cause more often than not is our lifestyle choices. When I have a patient who wants to get off some medications, or even just reduce them, it is important for them to realize that we need to look at what got them there to start.? Just blindly trying to get their blood pressure decreased or cholesterol lowered without educating them to what caused it to increase in the first place is the same thing that the Medical doctors do with prescription medication.? It is my job as a chiropractor to show them ways ? naturally with food choices, supplementation, and exercise ? to decrease a symptom.? And, as I start making changes to their nerve system by realigning vertebrae that connect with their vital organs, they will often say, ?Wow this is a miracle.?? And I tell them what I believe, and that is the truth.

Integrated Supplements: So many people blame age and hormonal/metabolic slowdown as the factor responsible for their poor health, expanding waistlines, and deconditioned physiques. Their implicit assumption is that the human body is just designed to start to wear out after only a couple of decades.? But you, and so many other over-40 bodybuilders, simply prove this assumption wrong in every conceivable way ? your level of bodyfat is remarkably low, your level of muscle mass is high, and, as natural bodybuilders, you?ve got to work with what nature gave you in the hormonal department. Obviously, you never could have achieved this success if you believed that your body began an inevitable decline after your 30th birthday.? What, do you believe, are some other limiting beliefs that may be holding people back from reaching their full potential ? and how do you address these limiting beliefs with your patients?

Dr. Morea: Some other really common limiting beliefs are ?It?s genetics, Doc.? ??I will often see people my age (43) and younger letting me know that their bad knees, or weight problem, or arthritis, is related to their mom and dad passing it on to them.? They have been told this by their doctor who, in turn, took care of their parents who had the same condition. By association, this could seem very true on the outside.? Upon further review, we find out in the case history that they eat the same foods as their parents ate; processed carbohydrates and too many trans fat foods.? They exercise even less than their parents because more of them have sedentary jobs, and they get continued reinforcement in drug ads and television commercials about the next miracle pill that will save them.? If we believe that old age and disease is related to our genetic lineage then we have an easy way out.? This limiting factor must be broken, and self-responsibility taught, for us to make true strides.? Once we show each of our patients that their lifestyle is what is causing their ill woes, we can move forward.? For those that don?t want to believe this, their reliance on pain pills and surgeries continue to occur.? Another limiting belief is that the body is not self-healing.? In chiropractic, we truly believe in the body?s incredible ability to heal itself.? Think about it: what happens when we have a cut?? Do we have to intervene?? Most of the time no ? the body repairs itself through natural clotting mechanisms ? white blood cells help invade the area, and within a week or so the body has done what it is supposed to have done.? For most things that go on in the body, we have a built in homeostasis that regulates us and keeps us in great shape.? As I get patients to understand with greater clarity the power animating their body, they start to take more responsibility in keeping it in shape.

Integrated Supplements: In your practice, you offer a full gamut of health solutions including nutritional and exercise consultations, supplements (including Integrated Supplements), massage, and yoga ? ?in addition to traditional chiropractic services.? I think it?s important for people to recognize that you can help them make meaningful improvements to their health precisely because you address the many different aspects of health in a natural and sustainable way.? How would you contrast your approach to that of other chiropractors?

Dr. Morea: As a chiropractic doctor, there are different schools of thought on how to take care of the patient.? There are some who try to be everything to everyone, there are some who only work with the spine and don?t want anything to do with supplement or exercise suggestions, and there are those who only work with nutrition and don?t adjust the spine at all.? Having had severe back pain back in my early 20?s, I found a chiropractor who just adjusted, and it worked great for me for the few visits before I attended chiropractic school.? When I got to Life University, the chiropractic college I attended, that is when I knew that there were many other approaches out there.? So with that being said, with the 11 years now being in practice, I have recognized, more than ever, the importance of coaching my patients, and giving real lifestyle advice that they can apply today and start getting results.? Every other week, we have our WOW talk, our wellness orientation workshop, that discusses chiropractic care, lifestyle stressors, exercise, supplements that almost every American is deficient in, with emphasis on whole food that is simple yet so effective in combatting many of today?s major illnesses.? We also discuss the importance of creating simple habits that can been implemented right away ? whether it is to create more abundant energy, to drop 15-20 pounds, or to just break away from the myriad of medications they are currently on.? So I believe overall that besides walking the talk, I give patients plenty of opportunity for understanding and application that they can use right away.

Integrated Supplements: Traditional physicians often take a lot of heat from the natural-health and chiropractic communities for over-relying on pharmaceuticals to treat problems (e.g., overweight, obesity, diabetes) which respond well to dietary and lifestyle changes.? But in fact, traditional physicians often implore their patients to improve their diet and exercise more.? The problem is that, more often than not, their patients simply don?t do it (at least not with any meaningful consistency).? Why do you think so many people struggle to consistently implement even the most basic diet and exercise strategies, and what approaches have you taken to make diet and exercise a more permanent part of your patients? lives?

Dr. Morea: The major challenge is that there is no accountability when they see their primary care health doctor.? It is so easy to say to a patient, ?eat more fruits and vegetables? ? and most people already know that anyway, and they already know they need to lose weight.? Why do they continue to struggle and yet some make it look so easy?? The answer is that the majority of patients go to their doctor only when they are sick, or have some type of symptom.? Maybe their blood pressure is high, maybe their energy is low, maybe they have had some other recent scare.? When they do their follow up appointment with their doctor, it is to check usually some diagnostic value whether it is blood pressure, a cholesterol reading, or an MRI.? And occasionally, on those follow up visits, the doctor will ask if they have lost weight or started eating better.? But that is not good enough.? There has to be more one-on-one support with the patient on a more regular and consistent basis to make true change.? In my office, follow up appointments are much more regular, sometimes in the beginning up to three times a week, and we do regular reexaminations where we get to ask questions related to changes in their diet, changes in their medications, and what exercise have they started.? Many times, we will get patients that truly start a lifestyle approach to eating better and we address the common foods to eat, the ones to stay away from, and even how many times they should be eating in the day.? We get to follow up with them on how often they are doing the recommended stretches, exercises, etc.? So, by checking them regularly and holding them accountable, they feel more motivated to continue with those positive action steps that have helped them along the way.

Integrated Supplements: At Integrated Supplements, our philosophy has always been that there?s really no such thing as ?sports nutrition.? ?There?s really just human nutrition.? Athletes and bodybuilders may need different amounts of nutrients than the average person, but the same overall nutritional principles apply to pretty much everyone.? This is why our product line contains effective ?sports nutrition? staples like Whey Protein Isolate and Creatine, but also products such as Fiber Balance, Green Detox, and Bio-Available Magnesium which fill the most important nutritional gaps encountered by athletes and non-athletes alike. ?What particular benefits do you feel green foods, fiber, and magnesium have for bodybuilding?

Dr. Morea: As a chiropractor and bodybuilder, I have been able to witness on myself and my patients the deficiency in greens, fiber, and minerals.? The problem is obvious to anyone who studies nutrition, and that is that most of us take in way too many processed foods that contribute to the very acidic bodies that we have.? Ask how many people get at least 5-7 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and one hand in ten may go up.? That is why we need a greens product in our diets.? We are just not getting enough and this addition helps alkalize our systems which helps out with chronic inflammation and lowers our acidity which helps out with our bone density.? When we are very acidic our bloodstream uses minerals from our bone to neutralize it; good for the blood, very bad for our bones.? Obviously,?fiber at the recommended amount of 30-35 grams a day is also not being gotten because of our lack of whole food nutrition.? The addition of fiber in our diets help our digestive tract tremendously and, as bodybuilders, this can help with allowing our bodies to become more regular as many of us stick to the same basic foods.? Fiber in addition can help out with keeping our sugar levels more sustained and that is always a good thing when it comes to weight loss and sugar metabolism issues.? I include both Green Detox and Fiber Balance every morning in my diet.? And finally Magnesium!? Of all the minerals as a chiropractor and bodybuilder that I see deficient it is Magnesium.? Once again this mineral is so deficient because we are not getting it through whole foods and the soil today is depleted of this vital mineral.? Since magnesium is found in many green foods, including seaweed, spinach, turnip greens, and spirulina, you can see why we may not be taking in enough of this incredible mineral.? As a chiropractor, I have seen magnesium deficiency lead to muscle weakness, insomnia, anxiety, phobias, brain fog, and even suicidal thoughts.? Magnesium is important for a good mood and helping stabilize blood pressure.? I have seen deficiencies in magnesium even lead to cardiac and blood sugar issues ? so as an athlete looking to maximize their muscle potential and sugar usage, magnesium supplementation is a must.

Integrated Supplements: In almost two decades in the supplement and nutrition business, I?ve encountered thousands of people who want to take supplements to improve their health or physiques. Very rarely, however, do I encounter people who have actually sat down and calculated their overall nutritional intake for any period of time to see which nutrients their diets may be lacking.? Bodybuilders are better than most, although they often have a tendency to calculate their protein intake and not much else.? Most people I?ve met (bodybuilders included) often have almost no idea what their caloric intake is ? never mind their intake of vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, and fatty acid ratios.? I think not having this knowledge really holds a lot of people back from reaching their full potential.? Can you share with our readers how important nutritional tracking is to your success as a bodybuilder?? Were you ever surprised to find that what you thought was a healthy diet was actually missing a few nutrients that you then needed to supplement?

Dr. Morea: First of all, that is a great question.? My bodybuilding knowledge in the last 20 years has come a long way.? When I first began competing back when I was in my early 20?s, I would eat the same 4-5 foods every day and wonder why I was so burned out and exhausted.? At that time I included quite a few processed carbohydrates, like bagels, as long as it fit in my protein, carbohydrate, and fat macros.? Little did I realize the importance of a lot of green leafy vegetables and the colorful array of other vegetables out there as well.? At that time, it was not uncommon for me to have a lot of muscle cramping and fatigue too, as I was definitely deficient in a lot of the minerals greens give us.? When I won my natural pro bodybuilding card this year, I was definitely getting a much broader group of foods including fish, some lean steak and grass fed beef, healthy cage free eggs, and a small amount of organic peanut butter in my diet to supply my healthy fats while eliminating almost all omega-6 fats.? I also included every night a huge salad with a mixture of dark green lettuce, different color peppers, tomatoes, and low fat cottage cheese.

For me, I have always tracked my protein, carbohydrates, and fat and knew exactly how much I was getting each day.? This past year, however, I made it a point to include the Green Detox and an array of colorful healthy vegetables in addition to the healthy fats and I believe this was by far the best I ever looked on stage and the best I ever felt. I owe that to my increased knowledge of eating whole foods and just being part of my lifestyle and not just a diet.? One month after my IFPA Pro North American bodybuilding win, I am still incorporating the same nutrition that allowed me to take home the first place award and my first overall pro card win at 43 years old!

Integrated Supplements: To me, one of the most frustrating things about bodybuilding is that it has the potential to be the single most health-promoting activity in which a person can engage, but, in actual practice, many would-be bodybuilders aren?t particularly healthy.? It?s very common, for example, to see bodybuilders who, though muscular, still carry quite a bit of extra body fat year round.

And while bodybuilders often give lip service to the value of fresh, nutritious, ?real? food, too many of them don?t practice what they preach.? In fact, processed ?junk? foods have become intertwined into the very fabric of bodybuilding nutrition.? At Integrated Supplements, we?ve written many times about the true nature of things like whey protein concentrate, casein powder, protein and energy bars, so-called ?good? fats, ready-to-drink protein shakes, and artificial sweeteners.? Judging by the evidence in the scientific literature, these are the sorts of foods and ingredients that even a marginally health-conscious person would probably seek to avoid, and yet these ingredients are all staples in products marketed towards bodybuilders and other fitness enthusiasts.

That?s why it?s so refreshing to see a successful bodybuilder like yourself who knows the value of natural, high-quality products like ours.? We?ve always said that serious bodybuilders don?t fill their bodies with junk, and you?re living proof of that.? Can you tell us how you came to place such an emphasis on natural, high-quality supplements and how you think such products helped you in your recent bodybuilding efforts?

Dr. Morea: When I competed two years ago, I overheard a guy who was 43 years old say this was the best he ever looked and he owed that to getting rid of all the artificial sweeteners and other pre-workout products that he used to take.? At the time I was taking all the major brands that you see in Supplement Warehouse and Bodybuilding.com.? I started looking into them and found that every one of them had an artificial sweetener in them whether it was aspartame or sucralose. I also found that almost every one of them was not pure; they almost all had a protein concentrate listed in their ingredients.? Then one day after my contest was over, I ran into an old friend that had a smaller gym and he told me about a new protein he was selling that tasted great, had no artificial ingredients, and was a pure protein isolate.? I was directed to your website, started reading the articles and the philosophy of Integrated Supplements, and decided first to try your whey protein out.? I was pleasantly surprised that I was taking something so pure that tasted so good.? And it had a totally different effect on my digestive system.? When I used to take some of the cheaper products, I always had an uneasy stomach and just attributed that at the time to being on a contest diet.? After I started taking the Integrated Whey Protein Isolate, I had no bloating, no stomach discomfort, and no uneasiness.? That is when I began promoting Integrated and invited some of my friends to try it out as well.? No doubt, I felt better and knew that I was not putting junk into my system; no artificial ingredients, no cheap fillers, and truly a product that was being absorbed to help the muscles recover as quickly as possible.

And then I started analyzing my pre-work out products and recognized that I was actually creating free radicals by taking in these NO products.? That was the last thing I wanted to do as a natural bodybuilder trying to live the best life I could.? I am clearly interested in eating as many healthy whole foods that I could, to have as many natural antioxidants in my system to help encounter those free radicals, and to turn back the clock on the aging process.? I got rid of the pre-work out products, started taking some extra caffeine before my work out with some simple sugars and felt much better.? Since then, I have been taking the Herbal Energy and feel that I am alert but not wired and that has made a difference. I also have always taken creatine and now use exclusively the Creapure Creatine carried by Integrated Supplements as well.? I do five grams before my workout, 5 grams during, and 5 grams after my workout.? And finally I believe that upping my greens with my salad and lots of veggies, and taking Green Detox has helped out with my inflammation tremendously and allowed me to stay injury free.? I take your magnesium every day and this was the first bodybuilding contest that I did not have a Charlie horse in my calves when I was posing.? Obviously, increasing my magnesium levels was paramount to my muscles feeling less tight and overall stronger.? I continue to use Integrated Supplement products and will continue to endorse them as I feel that you stand behind what you believe and you understand the difference between hype and truth.? Thank You!

Integrated Supplements:?It's our pleasure, Dr. Mike. ?Keep up the great work!
