Focus on the Family Community: Relationships and Marriage: my ...

You write that you have always been open and honest with him, which is really good. It sounds like he was not as comfortable being as open and honest about his true feelings as you were. There are lots of reasons: Maybe he was afraid that if you found out how he truly felt, he might lose you (especially before you were married). Maybe he's afraid of being a dad, and thought that the fear would ebb as he got older. Maybe he sees the state of the world, and doesn't feel comfortable taking on the responsibility of trying to raise children in such a difficult circumstance. He also might just like his life, as it is now, with you.

But you won't know any of this until he feels comfortable being open and honest. You can start by seeking to understand where he's coming from. The best thing is to not attack him for this, but to understand through empathy and compassion.? Once you both come to a full and open understanding of each other, you'll know better what action to take.
